If you have large tracts to hunt there's nothin wrong with hounds. Not my preference but to each his own.

No his from Texas... Just seems like straight hound will run a hog alote farther....I think no more than a 1/4 hound in any breed will work just fine...

It mainly depends on the dog. There are some hounds that are silent and rough as all get out woll down right stop a hog,on the other hand there are some that are loose baying and won't get rough enough to stop one.

crosstock I was just poking fun a another member, he will know who he is.

Hounds work for some folks and don't for others, same thing goes for the country you hunt. They are my all time favorite breed of dog and always will be, most guys seem to be happier TODAY with dogs that hunt silent and "sneak up " on a hog. But there are other men who catch hogs with all hounds. A cur with a good shot of GOOD hound blood is to me an asset. God Bless,Waylon

Too much hound is not a bad thing...if you are catching hogs.  If you are not catching hogs and just running them ALL day long...there may be too much hound with not enough grit.  I hunt All hounds (plotts) and I one catahoula and dont have a problem catching hogs.  Some guys dont mind an all day race...if that is okay with a man is happy, that is all that counts.

I also run hounds to strike, and an AB to catch, we catch enough game to keep going. Dont go off the stereotype about breeds because every breed has good and bad, and different purposes...meaning that the bad may excel at something else.

Is to much hound at bad thing in hog hunting???

the right amount of hound in certain breeds can be a plus..

the right mixture of a good pitbull and hound can make an awesome hog dog...but I have seen both extremes in the same litter.

one thing for sure...I don't want a hound that starts a cold track and 3 hours later jumps the hog when a good cur dog can find the same hog in less the 30 minutes...

but when I think about the best hog dogs I have seen in the past...most had a touch of hound in them...
