Title: Feeding times?
Post by: bowhunter662000 on April 01, 2012, 12:15:33 pm
I was wondering when do you guys feed.  After or before a hunt?   I personally feed after a hunt cause I think they run better with an empy stomach than they would with a belly full of dog chow....

I feed my dogs at 6:00 to 7:00 pm every night. When we hunt in the morning i have a coffee, they can have water. They run till we quit. I will feed them a small amount when we get home. It's like after a hard workout. And then i will feed at the usual time. I feed Taste of the Wild, a grain free dog food. My 12 year old cat keeps up all day. If we hunt at night they have already ate. Sidney

We never feed before we hunt. Always afterwards. One time we got a last minute call about going hunting and I had fed the dogs earlier that day. A couple of them puked after running hard. I wouldn't want to go for a jog with food in my stomach.

I hunt at night and most nights i feed around 6.00pm so if its been 24 hours since they last ate and i know we are about to hunt that night,i give them an egg or 2 for some energy and maybe a slice of white bread, just to settle the hunger but nothing too heavy. it has never affected the way mine hunt,i agree with schitemhard,i myself like to eat an hour before im out all night so im sure the dogs do too. Either way,if you keep it light you shouldnt have any troubles.

I feed in the morning so they get food after a hunt. I don't want them pooping too much.

I hunt on an empty stomach. I don't even stop when I am barfing. When it is time to hunt I don't care about food one way or the other. I do make sure they get plenty of water.

i feed my dogs once a day. but i am careful my dogs will not go 24 hrs without eating when hunting...about 10 /12 hrs is max...so after a six hr hunt they should be pretty hungry because it has been about 18 hrs since their last feeding...this is give or take...

on a last minute notice to make a hunt and it is close to feeding time i give 1/3 to 1/2 a normal ration...and usually a normal ration after the hunt...nothing set in stone...just using commom sense...

I feed at night, when we run in the morning we add electrolyte mix to thier water, before the hunt and sometimes when we break for a bit but never do we feed before as I am not going to have thier stomachs flip and twist, its an issue that can be prevented.

never has happened to my dogs...but it can happen, more common in large dogs, especially those with a big chest...another name for twisted gut is bloat...usually happens when the dog overeats right after a hard work out...

good point Arrowbar...
