Post by: dwhd93 on April 10, 2012, 06:20:56 pm
I'm tryin to find a good feild to get into right now that makes pretty decent money and where there's room for me to move up. I'm only 19 and have experience in a lil of everything from runnin heavy equipment to machinin and weldin and even some paint and body work. I just wanna hear what kinda jobs or trades that you enjoy and how to go about gettin into em. I ain't askin for a job just wanna hear how a young guy like me could get into a good career

according to a lot of people, the oil field is booming, but cant find 1 that is hiring rite now for non experienced people. you got the military with college afterwards to further your education for a better career. tech schools for welding certs, diesel mech, marine mech. police academy and then on to a police force. you may can try for border patrol or ICE.

I work in the oilfield there are lots of companies that hire without experience, some even prefer it so they can train you. Just like any other job you just have to be honest about work experience!

Nomac, Patterson, nabors, scandrill, latshaw that's just a few company's I can think of off the top of my head!

Hope this helps  :)

rite now nabors aint hiring with no experience, or atleast the tyler and alice office. scandrill not sure about. i drove to tyler and was told NO by both nabors and scandrill.

Look into the unions. Some might not like them, and I come from a family of union haters so I understand why. Lol but they have some great apprenticeship programs. I just started the construction wireman program, and am really enjoy it. I have a friend who is in the plumbing program, and it's about the same as well.  There's good benefits, and raises after each semester you finish. Plus you start out at more than most jobs you can get at 19. You go to school as you work, but it's pretty easy. It's like most things though, it is what you make of it. Be a slacker, and the kind of stereotypical union worker, and you'll stay at the bottom spinning your wheels forever. Work hard and take care of business and it will quickly begin to pay off. Let me know if you need help I could give you some more details, and hopefully point you in the right direction.

Drive to Alice and go to every company on the main drag. Literally they are all hiring someone. Look at Fesco. Just go in and talk. Online or phone calls mean nothing!!!

i will end up doing that now that I got a lil money. being unemployed and driving 3 hrs 1 way with price of fuel digs deep into the wallet. where is their main drag? i think i tried fesco in bryan, but was told nope, not as of this minute, but fill out app, send it in and give a call back either today or wen. im gonna call them back tomorrow and see what the deal is.

You need to look at Fluor. They have entry level positions. You will have to travel but you will make good money. If you don't want to leave home, best get your butt in the union apprenticeship or convince mommy and daddy to pay for school. If you go to tech school, learn instrumentation. You will stand at an instrument with pocket tools making 25 an hour watching electricians pull cables and work thier asses off for 20.

A lot of companies are going strictly to online apps these days! As far as the oilfield my best advice is put in your app and give it a couple of days then start calling and keep calling until you get some definite answers!

Bus. 281. If you have a CDL there are about 6 signs outside companies looking for drivers and they are hiring on the spot(as long as you can pass a drug test and physical).

You may not like the work or the entry level pay or having me push you to your limits, but if you don't mind long hours and being out of town I'd like to talk to you.

I'll be back in town next week and I highly value my family/ hunting time so if you have a problem passing random drug tests, background checks or if you don't get along with Hispanics, don't bother getting in touch with me, but if all of that is fine and you never ask to borrow my dogs, you may pm me and I'll give you my number.

If you don't mind going to school a few more years, get an associate degree in nursing. I'm dum as a bag of hammers and i've made a pretty good living in the operating room. If you hogdog, and can field care your dogs, you can nurse. And people always gonna get sick. Cool thing about associates degree is n most cases, u can work, continue schooling on line and get your B.S. while working as a nurse and making good $$$. And you usually can get a B.S. that way quicker than just signing up for a straight B.S. program. Thing i hate about working n operating room is call. Been taking call for 35+ years and it really screws your weekends up.
Also, know u in Texas, but in Alabama, Mercedes plant, Hyundai, Honda, all take applications online. Also building a huge railroad hub just outside Birmingham and there's all kinds of railroad jobs online. If your willing to move around, Railroad will do pretty good by you. Good luck, young fella. You'll do good cuz you sound like you WANT to work, and that right there will put u ahead of 95% of the applicants where ever to try out.

he would have to go to school for his A&P since he cant join the military. the a&p schools aint cheap, but also aint over priced. you can search around and find accredited schools that will get you your a&p license for around $1000-3000, all expenses paid.

Yes charles he probably would need to get the licence to work commercial aircraft or apply for contracting aviation jobs.  It's really hard to get a shot without license.

Auto tech isn't a bad field . You have to know what you are doing to make money. Usually you start off as a tech assist at 12.50 then move up ,usually in 6months, to tech making around $18. If you know what you re doing its gravy work.

Go work on some oil rig..... Start out as a rough neck and move your way up. Take advantage of it while you're young and damn good money but no time to spend it. Got a buddy who is making around 24 hourly but works overtime all the time and gets paid double so really its 48 hourly.

I'm in the MEP engineering field doing drafting and design work on schools, hospitals and other city buildings. If you can learn a program called Revit you'd have a solid job for a long time with multiple companies. Everyone is switching from AutoCAD to Revit and it's cutting the draftsmen out of the equation and the engineers just put the information in basically and Revit does the drafting.

I tried army and marines right after I got outa high school and both told me no because I 6 months before my physical for em I tore my ACL and mcl and I know what you mean about the oilfield I been tryin that after I was told I couldn't volunteer to serve my country and due to the bills I have I can't afford not to have a full time job

Did you have your ACL repaired?  If so, by now you should be healed and ready to go.   Once it is healed, the military should be a good option.

i will end up doing that now that I got a lil money. being unemployed and driving 3 hrs 1 way with price of fuel digs deep into the wallet.

That's true, but, with a job the wallet fills back up.  Without, it keeps getting lower.  So spend what you have to to find a job that you need.

rite now the military is going through a RIF (reduction in force). they are putting people out that want out, med boarding, allowing early retirement, not extending retention contracts for senior officers and enlisted. if he was told NO a couple years ago, and they have him still on file, they still more than likely will not allow him in becuase he will need a waiver and they are not granting a lot of waivers rite now. the military is down sizing again, just like during the clinton administration.

Sad to hear that you have to go to A'ghan to work.  That is not optimal.  I wish you luck in finding something here.

I find the phrase "like white on rice" odd.  You do know that rice has to be bleached to be white right?  In it's normal state, it is brownish in color.

Then again, many of our sayings are illogical.  Knock on wood for good luck  ...  has it's origin in old europe where cultures thought the tall trees held up the skies, where the god's lived.  So they knelt at the base of the tree, knocked on it, then asked their favors from the gods.  And now it has evolved to warding off bad luck.  Strange.  So very strange.

hey, I see that you are from Manvel...lots of chemical plants around...if you don't like to travel you really need to get that 2 year degree...as a youngster I wanted everything right now...  :) but you are very young and time is on your side...you can sacrifice now for 2 years and it will pay big in the long run...get the loans and go get that 2 year associates degree femical operator at brazosport in Clute...you will be picked up by a chemical company and they pay well with good benefits...the good thing is that your job stays in one location...and as long as you are  dependable and a good worker that works well with others you are pretty much guaranteed a job for many years...this is one of the 2 year degrees that gives a big bang for the bucks...the good part is that you probably will not have to move from where you are at because of the location of most of the plants...not too far from manvel...good luck in getting your career started...

I have never had any dealing with any VFD, but a lot of paid departments are civil service and have to go by civil service law which requires them to test for promotions.
