Title: Berry Time!
Post by: djhogdogger on April 11, 2012, 08:33:33 pm

They are literally growing on every fence line and canal bank around here. Oh and the hogs should be happy because the woods are loaded with them too.  Lets hear yall's favorite ways to fix them. These are going into a cobbler.

I agree with both of you. Fresh blackberries are hard to beat.

OCD, I had them like that as a kid as well. Still do some times. My dad used to pour half and half over them for us and sprinkle a little sugar on top.

Waylon, with all of the rain we have been having and it been unusually hot, the weather has just been perfect for them.

I just like 'em plain... nothin' better than poppin' a few fresh picked wild berries when you're out enjoying the woods!

Friend of mine has been producing commercial rasberries for the last couple years... university has actually bred the thorns off a them and increased their size to almost a damn ping-pong ball... too easy, too much... just not the same for me  ;D

Thats funny..... I checked out a patch that was loaded with blooms a month ago, and expected it to be loaded with ripe ones today when checking cows, but there was just a moderate ammount, mostly green and looked like they were gonna be on the small side.  Can't beat cobler and icecream.

I had our 5 month old puppy with me when I was picking the berries and he was watching me. The next thing I know, he was eating them off the vine. I hope they aren't poisenous to dogs.  ???

Oh man if my wife sees those pictures she will make me drive her over there. She drives me crazy this time of year. I am not a fan of berries that have seeds that get stuck in my teeth. We are stuck in a subdivision now and she will make me stop on the side of the road let her out and circle around so she can go pick dewberries. Last year they sucked because there was no rain. I tell my wife she needs some dewberry dogs rolleyes So she can turn them out and they bring back the berries ;D

Yes sir!  :)  This is an easy recipe.

You will need a 9 x 13 cake pan, sprayed with non stick spray

This recipe calls for 4 cups blackberries but I use about 6 cups.

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees

First mix the batter:

2 cups bisquick
2/3 cup sugar
1 cup whole milk
1/2 stick of melted butter (do not use margerine)

Mix these ingredients well and pour into the bottom of your pan. Don't worry, the batter rises to the top while cooking.

Then mix your berries with

1 1/3 cup sugar
1 3/4 cup water (I know it sounds like a lot of water but trust me it works)

Stir together gently so that you don't tear the berries up and then pour the berries over top of the batter.

Bake at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes or until the crust on top is golden brown.  :)

If you try it, let me know how it turns out.

Take berries and fill a mason jar up with em. Then fill mason jar to the top with moonshine (or any other white liquor). Let it sit on a window sill for about a week, shake it around a little bit every day. Pour out the liquids and strain them. Then fill the jar with the berries up with sugar, let it sit (shake it up every day) until all the sugar is gone and there is a bunch of syrup in the bottom. Keep doing this until no more juice comes out of the berries. Put this in a different jar. Mix the liquor and the syrup until you get the taste you like. Then strain it again and add a little bit of lemon juice.

We call this the strawberry panty dropper, the women love it ;)

Done it with strawberries, blueberrys, blackberries and imagine it would work with any kind of fruit.
