Title: ?? Post by: cash on April 12, 2012, 01:03:42 pm How do i get my dogs to start ranging out
Title: Re: ?? Post by: Reuben on April 12, 2012, 01:31:44 pm could be several reasons...
some dogs will never range out...because it is not in them to do so... other dogs will not range out on their own...but will follow a good strike dog all day long and look good doing it... other dogs don't range out because the dog handler moves too fast and the dog might be trying to keep up with the 4 wheeler...if you hunt this way it is best to watch the dogs and when they act like they want to work a track you stop and let them work it out...sometimes when doing this the dogs will follow the track and find a hog...other times when you stop you may need to walk in the general direction of which way the track went and this will sometimes encourage the dogs to range out or follow the track, or, you might actually put them on the hog by doing this... another thing to try is to keep the dogs fresh and energetic...take them to a good place in the woods with fresh hog sign and dump the dogs out and just sit in the truck or 4 wheeler...the dogs should get bored and roll out... it is all about setting the dogs up for success...and improving the dogs style of hunting... Find a firecracker stand and purchase them lil paper poppers and when the dog least expects it, throw one at his butt. Tie a bunch of coke can to his tail and slap him on the keister. Get up to a 25 mile per hour speed in your truck with the dog dangling out the window then drop him and hit the brakes, this is called the inertia method. Two words, butt rocket. No seriously pu him in good sign and let genetics take over, if he won't hunt, find another dog that will. Title: Re: ??
