Title: artificial insemination
Post by: txdogos on May 13, 2012, 08:37:26 pm
has anyone out there done breeding artificially?? I am going to experiment with it and have some semen being shipped in from Georgia but am not sure how long it will last or how much usually comes. If i have enough for a couple breeding or what. Any input will help. thanks

Have a few friends that have had great results, breeding coon hounds.  Make sure you use some one that has plenty of experience, to do the procedure.  There are several different procedures that can be used.  Don't use the cheapest one, you get what you pay for.  Good luck, hope this helps.

If you are using frozen it will keep but if you are using fresh chilled it has a definate shelf life. You should also do progesterone tests on the bitch to hit the right day or you may well be throwing your money away.

I have done it with great success.  I am assuming you are doing the "chilled" version?  If so, make sure you hold her rear section up (sitting in a chair, you can just hold her back half on your lap) for 25-30 minutes after placing it inside.

Just holding up their back half is a whole lot simpler than how I was told..... "walk her around on her front end, wheelbarrow style for 30-40 min."

Either way keep it elevated........good luck with it, hope it works well for you.

well i got her inseminated, i think that will be the last time i go that route. Lots of extra costs involved with it, and it no one seems very confident she will get prego. All they say is it is up to mother nature.

If you dont mind me asking, break down the costs from start to finish because it's something I'm looking into and would like a general idea since I've never had experience with it.

If you handle the female's side yourself, it will be about $250-300 for the collection and shipping of the male.  That of course is on top of the stud fee.

im sure every vet is different but mine was 250 dollars to collect the male + 70 dollars to ship it next day from Georgia + 40 dollars for each progesterone test for the female, i got 3 so thats 120 dollars + the vets fee to put the semen in the female which was 70 dollars + he charged me another 70 for emergency even tho his business was still open but apparently he was off that day + stud fee of 1300 dollars = a sh!t ton of money

its gonna be different for everyone but on the male side you have cost of collecting him and shipping it to you.. On the female side you need to get the progesterone tests so you hit the perfect day for breeding and depending on if you put the semen in yourself or let a vet do it. I would let the vet do it the first time, he was all up in there. Was not pleasant for the female

There is really nothing done that you can't do yourself.  Different strokes for different folks.

and its not as horrible as it sounds, the owner of the male is a good guy, he will send more semen next heat cycle for no charge if she isnt prego.. But there are still all those other fees

I helped the vet and doc from a and m develope the extender for the semen . as long as the semen stays below freezing it should stays good. i don't know how much they send or whether it comes in straws or ample. they should send info on how use it. we were breeding females about 18 yrs ago we would breed them three times according to there temperature. we had  good duck. had a male treeing walkers think we pulled him i can't remember he feel out of a tree broke hi back. can you tell me who to contact about semen selling. he was twice state champion of Texas and had two sons out of my female . i found a gyp that goes back to that cross .trying to buy here she is ten yrs old and i would like to find semen on her  great grandpa. any information would help. god bless
