Both work good. I have a big cd (around 115lbs) that catches both. Almosthad a 150lb  hog killed by catchin on his neck. When he has ear he tends to squat but stay standing. When he catches neck he anchors, he drops his chest flat on the ground amd spreads his two front legs out to the side and pens the hog to the ground. So on him id almost perfer neck.

I have to have a bulldog cath on the ear, maybe the jaw.  I Cull for dogs catching on the nose, neck, and legs.  I consider hogs livestock, so I'm working em constantly.  A dog catching on the nose ruins the hog and a dog catching on the leg usually breaks it.

I have a sow that a bulldog caught on the front foot, and to this day she still has a limp.  I turned her loose behind the house and I'll see her or catch her about two or three times a year.

Yea, wasn't sure if the neck was a hard spot for a dog to hold, or if its better cuz ears come off. Another thing... if a dog catches and holds every time hes a cd right? No matter what bread he is?

Man i have one around the same lb as well. He does exactly the same. When he catches both his front legs are tucked in under his body and he just drops everything hes got. I let him go on a 150lb sow the other day and within minutes he broke her neck and killed her. But i cant complain at all

seems to me that the ears are the way to go, they appear to have more control there.  i wont keep one that catches the snout for very long. personally have never had a cd that caught the neck, but do have one that when run alone catches the ear but when run in tandem she catches a front leg.  she will snap the leg and get under the hog and force it to lay down.  but if your catching hogs with the dog, it really dont matter.  kinda like some may not like my strike dogs, but they produce a load of hogs. do what works for you!

Mines kinda weird 90% of the time in the field his all ear but in the training pen hes almost always neck.

i prefer a clean ear holder 2 reasons a good holder will tuck himself in beside the pig and very realy get riped dogs that hold a good pig on the neck tend to get there guts droped out .2 reason there isn't anything worth eating on an ear

By neck do you mean top, side, or under neath? My bulldog catchs on what I call the jawl sometimes which is the meaty part at the end of the jaw bone. He's a big dog and seems to control/anchor the hog good this way. As long as the dog catches hard then gets in low and tight to the hog he should do good. I think my dog catches there sometimes because that parts gets in his mouth first when he's going for the ear and he just latches on.

I totally agree with what you said with the ear over the neck. The neck is not a deal breaker. My big deal breaker is a leg or a*s catcher .

He catches on three side behind the jaw. Ty all BTW for ur input. In fairly new to hunting hogs and training dogs for so every bit helps me learn something new and I get to build my own likes and dislikes about it :) BTW Huntsville tx and surrounding areas I'm opening a bay/ training pen in the area for the pubic to come train in a wooded pen. Check out bay pen  forums for more info on it.

as long as the dog dont let go when you get their its fine . but catching a nose gets other dogs cut more often
