Title: movin south ?
Post by: smarlowe on May 30, 2012, 12:25:54 pm
Me and the wife have been thinkin bout relocating. Probably toward the south. The carolinas or GA maybe. We definitley are thinking south. We don't know LA or mississippi or texas. I like to be way out from town where I can do as I please. I also plan on building our retirement home there. I like to build with as few permits and interference with the state as possible !the home I'm in now needed no permits at all ! That's how I like it ! Also has to be lots of good huntin and fishin. Maybe a place with public ground bordering me. Because most of you don't know me I'm just a redneck that lives in hill country ! I will always be a redneck but some flat ground is soundin real nice. If you were gona relocate, where would it be ?

i like where im at in central texas. but if i had a choice to relocate it would be in the texas hill country. around mason, Llano, brady, fredricksburg, or san saba. i killed my first hog in brady and go to mason alot. and i dont care who you are its some of the most beautiful country there is to look at.

If I had to move from east Texas I would move to south east Oklahoma around Sardis Lake. I go deer hunting up there a couple times a year and it is some pretty country. Sardis Lake has some good fishing I have even heard it has some walleye in it. And I know where I have deer hunted it is a deer hunters dream. The bad side is the tornados and not as many hogs as there are here.

Thanks guys, that part of texas sounds possible. I'm big into deer huntin, will always hunt these big guys in ohio but I hunt everything else too. I've realized the last couple of years how much more there is out there. Aside from the deer huntin, ohio is lacking. And if I sold out I could set us up rreal nice somewhere.would like to be able to get into hogs on a regular basis and find some land that I could have a small farm on. Like my porch settin these days too ! I don't like traffic or housing developments, I like havin to drive into town and a small town at that. Ill be checkin land prices in those areas. Thanks again and keep it comin

Another thing that's had us thinkin about this is how friendly people in the south are. I've done some travelin in the huntin industry and there is no comparison if we go north the people are generally rude. Even the staff and law enforecement just short with ya and damn rude to deal with. The southern trips are just the opposite.

Just remember the further west you go the less rain you have...I was transplanted from central tx to west tx an I hate how dry it is an how its not very green...just saying..also your going to pay an arm an leg for country in fredricksburg/maso area...brady, san saba, an llano are a bit more reasonable an the deer hunting in  my opinion is better too...if you dont mind hills an rock you may want to look at kerrville an junction area.

No cartel trouble, im 30 minutes from the LA line on I 10.....cartels are on the west  border of the state.  land varies GREATLY. We can kill 4-5 deer in the SE tex area. Beaumont is the big town around here. There are farming/small towns all over in almost every direction. ....i live 10minutes outside beaumont in a town of mabye 2500.....maybe.

Hey schitem, I toured an old plantation once outside of charrleston. It was pretty cool down there, we thought about that area. This is something were thinkin of doing in the next year or 2. My youngest son will probly be movin out soon and these hills aren't gettin smaller as I age.

Theres only a dogger or two in every other town and theres enough hogs to hit the woods or private ranches every weekend if you rotate your spots and work around the weather,i dont go every week but its not from lack of hogs, just gettin a lil lazy in my old age haha.

I'm born and bred north Louisiana. An hour drive in any direction changes the landscape dramatically. Go three hours and ur in a different world. LOL. Anywhere on the Tx- La. Border would give u great people plenty of hunting and fishing etc.

Smartlowe, one thing to keep in mind aboutr the SE,....it gets really,....I mean REALLY humid here, and not just in the summer, winters here are painful sometimes as well. Our humidity is murder here, I'm in north Bama, borna and raised here and I HATE this humidity, always have and always will. Stay west of the Mississippi and you should be ok....I kinda like TX too. Lots of hogs in most parts. I love the SW myself,....dry suits me just fine. Good luck.

I was raised in north Texas, and transplanted to Louisiana back in '92. I live about 30 minutes southeast of Lake Charles in SWLA. As far as hunting and fishing goes, like Justin said, we have everything to hunt, but quail. Saltwater fishing about 20 miles to the east of me, real good freshwater within a couple miles from the house. Plenty of hogs to hunt. Within and hour an a half north, they have some unbelievable deer hunting, for the south. Have some above average public land all around  Food is good, and the people are very friendly.
The area is mostly rice and cattle farms.
Prices away from town 30 minutes or so aren't bad. Bad closer to town.
Downfalls
Humidity and heat absolutely sug!
Mosquitoes are a fact of life.
Deer flies get pretty bad also.
Disclaimer: Texas will always be "home", lol.

Thought about this alot myself, but guess ill just stay right here in these old mtns. No gators, no wolf's, no quill pigs, its hot and humid in the summer but in a deep holler its much cooler. Plenty of bear, deer, and Turkey. Not much for hogs tho.
But ive always wanted to move back to La. If I could find a place far enough away from town.

I'm with the south east Texas guys, but come spend a week or two here the end of July first of august to get a taste of the heat and humidity. By the middle of May it's pretty well to hot to run dogs except at night, but the fishing is still pretty good then. If you buy larger tracts of land 50 acres or more you can usually find it for 3k an acre or less in my area. In a perfect world I would go to Colorado the end of may and stay there until the end of archery elk season then come back to Texas. Also Texas has no state income tax.

Oh,......don't forget about the gants in south GA in the summer time. From about Perry on down, they get unreal for about 4 months or so. They swarm you when you go outside, get in your nose, mouth, eyes and ears. Torment like no other,....just didn't want you to move there without knowing man.

Check it out around Toledo bend resivoir and Sam Rayburn lake lots of land for sale around those two lakes and those lakes are at most 30 miles apart lived here for 19 years great deer hunting best freshwater fishing a man could ask for and more hogs than you could poke a stick at there is thousands of acres of national forest that a man can run his dogs on when ever he wants

Not sure about north Georgia but they run dogs in south Georgia. No dog hunting for bear in central Georgia. Gave the pointer to a friend. Gonna try and breed my dane/pit to a pure Campbell cur and a English pointer/pit. Hopefully a pointer next year.
