Title: got a question Post by: dwhd93 on June 01, 2012, 08:49:46 pm I got a 7 month old ybmc pup that just recently turned on but he's a couple bark then catches but doesn't have the jaw power to hold or he just lets go my question is. Is there a way to make him less catchy without ruinin him? Or will he eventually gain more jaw muscle to keep hold? I wouldn't mind havin a rcd but if he doesn't have the jaws to keep hold id like to make him bay

He tries to catch the wrong hog to ealry in his life and it may be his last hog or it may be enough to make him stand back. If it were me and you didnt want him to catch, I'd put him on a ruff sow and let her knock him around a little bit. Or you could try a muzzle. At months old, he probably doesn know how to hold a hog and he probably doesnt have the jaw strength at such a young age.
Title: Re: got a question Post by: Reuben on June 01, 2012, 10:00:47 pm the pup will get smarter about putting his mouth on a hog...if he lives over it...but he will be very catchy and will probably need a running vest...that is my bet...even if he respects a hog he will get caught up in a place where he can't manuever and the chances of getting cut up will be high at some point in time...

It won't help his mind any but if jaw power is something you want, get him eating raw hard frozen meat and bone. It's good for him and will build muscle like you wouldn't believe.

Just my opinion, but he is still a pup, nowhere near old enough to tackle a grown hog in the wild.

Got him to back up and bay for about 5 minutes yesterday ha then straight catch.
