There has always been a population of white sharks that patrol the deep edge of the Gulf...  when i was a kid they caught an 18 footer off of Tampa bay... on one of my favorite freedive spots lol... first time I ever felt my butthole pucker hahaha...  ;D   I remember they had to cut the shark into 5 sections just to get it in the boat...

Just a few years ago, a friend of mine was on a commercial spearfishing trip out in the middle grounds.  Deep water, big fish, known for the occasional white shark.  At 130', with a stringer full of bloody fish... he shot another that dug in under a big coral mound...  leaving his stringer on top of the reef, he went in and under to dig out the wounded fish... when he came out, he described it as "seeing a shadow coming over him"... :o

... a full grown white shark was cruising DIRECTLY over him at that point, just a few fee above.... he said the eye of the shark was "glued" to him the whole way past....

... once the big shark dissappeared into the haze, he had to make the painful decision to head for the surface.... knowing a deco stop would be necessary...  WITH a stringer of fish hanging at your side no less....  ;D

... He said that was the longest deco stop of his life.

Kind of freaked me out seeing that White Sharks are listed as common residents of the Gulf Of Mexico on a TPWD poster. I am infatuated with sharks, especially White Sharks. Scary and exciting to know there is one here in our own back yard...

Cheers

Reminds me of a story from a friend over in Saudi....  they were out on a spearfishing trip and saw a big white shark actually run into a sea buoy....  the shark went on to disgorge half of a half-digested dolphin... scary to think about a fish fast enough to catch a dolphin...

When I was in the service I spent a little time in Hawaii. There is a place there named Ft. Derussey and it is for R&R for servicemen.

Anyway, I rented a surfboard and paddled out to catch a wave. I was sitting on the surfboard and happened to look under me and there was a shark swimming under me. It was alot longer than the surfboard and wider and I was terror stricken. I would be like a big top water bait. This shark could have bit me in two with ease.

All I knew to do was get on top of the surfboard and go to shore because the tide was incoming. Everything was fine until this giant wave was about to crash over me. I started paddling as fast as I could but soon realized that I was going too fast as I hit the bottom of the wave.  All I could think of was getting thrown off the board. I get a death grip on the board and held on as I was thrown around like I was in a giant maytag.

When the surf board finally came to the top I was still on it and now I was close enough to shore to start paddling. Finally I got back to the shore and immediately turned in the surfboard and told them I would not be needing it anymore even though I had it rented for the day.
That was 1967 and I have never set foot in the ocean since that day.

A spot I used to surf in California everyday always had sea lions. One morning things felt weird so I went in early. That same day a big great white was spotted near that spot. Then I realized there were no sea lions out that morning. I guess they saw the shark and got out of the water. I was the only thing out on the water that morning in prime shark feeding time. It freaked me out so bad I did not go surfing again for almost a week. ;D If that shark wanted to eat me I would have been eaten and there would have been nobody around to help me. So much for that sharks think surfers look like sea lions. They are way smarter than that in my have been on the dinner plate opinion.

Theres sharks all over the gulf.  Id love to take some of these Tourists up in a helo and fly them up the coast.  Im sure if they knew how many sharks were in the gulf during the summer months, our "shark attacks" would go WAY down.
