Title: Snake deterrents....
Post by: dabutcher on April 27, 2009, 12:01:12 pm
i've noticed i'm not the only one with a snake problem this year... i've killed 3 water mocassins in the yard and my wife says she saw a copper head by the carport.

anyone know of any old time deterrents or ways to keep the snakes aways??  i keep my grass mowed and the the front and back pastures by the house cut down as well.  both ponds are cleaned out and i bait for mice and rats to help with the ones the cats don't catch now and then.

i've got 2 small kids that like to play outside and it makes me nervous with the number of snakes i'm getting already, not to mention the 3 pups i have at the house.

I always heard they would not cross lime, my mom and grandmother have done it all my life and swear by it.  I dunno though, in case you want to try it that is the white powder not the green fruit.

I heard they don't like mothballs - but who does though.

Cheers

Good ideas, I've heard the lime and moth ball before too.
Moth balls under the house keep out everything (snakes, rodents, bugs), is what I was told.
Also heard that if you spray the perimeter fencelines with diesel, but as we all know, that is not enviromentally friendly, so that is one I would not suggest.

If you can put up with the noise, You might try and get some guinneas. I have heard that they will eat insects and snakes.

Get a couple barn cats.  You won't see many dead snakes, but you'll notice there aren't many snakes around any more.  Plus, you'll know how bad your problem really is if you start finding dead cats. LOL ;)

that's what i don't get....i've got 3 outside cats i don't feed them much.  they live off of the mice and other things they kill in the pastures and in my barn.  i give them food once every week to keep them around and i do pet them and keep them wormed and keep flea killer on em.  i just don't feed em much to keep them hunting, and they definitely ain't starved so i know they're hunting.  i've never had a snake problem like this before.

kinda got me baffled.  i did put out some lime and mothballs.   hopefully this will keep them at bay.

guinnea's (SP)  work for sure. I got some several years back when we had the grasshopper plaque. Within 2 days  I had no insects and I do mean not one. No snakes either they would kill them too. The birds are a PIA, they are dumb as a box of rocks, had to save them more than once from the rain. they would hold their heads up and end up drowning (i kid u not) but for acres and acres of bug and snake free land I put up with them. They make great guard dogs too.

When the cats start disappearing, you have a big problem ;)

Called my pest guy and he said mothballs and kitty litter. So I put out two big boxes of mothballs, a 30lbs bag of kitty litter, and snake away from Trator Supply. Killed five rattle snakes last week before I put out the deturent.

well...thanks everyone for the help...  i put out a couple hundred pounds of lime and a 12 boxes of mothballs.  lmao

it's worked so far but i hope the mothball smell fades after a while.  i can definitely see why the snakes or anything else wouldn't want to be around them...   :-X

Mothballs is correct but it is not the lime that works best,it is sulhur. You can buy it at a feed store in bulk. You can do as mentioned above, blend the mothballs and sulphur powder toghether and spread around your perimeter,no more snakes.
