Title: Progression Of My Pups Post by: Reuben on June 28, 2012, 08:45:13 pm the pups were born on 5/21/12. Five males and two females...cut tails and dew claws at 5 days and at 2.5 weeks I put one of my old and sweaty tshirts in the dog house with the pups...by the time they came out of the house they were already bonding with me without any fear of me or my smell.
at 4 weeks they were introduced to gun fire and the smell of gun powder...but I did it at the right time and they responded well to it...I exposed them to the gun fire once a day for three days and they should be broke but will do it about 3 more times over the next few months just to make sure... Today they are 5 weeks old and I introduced them to liver...I waited until they were very hungry before each one got a small piece...I made them work for it so they would be eager for it the next time...I then let them out of the pen and as they milled around me I cast out some liver bits about 7 or 8 feet upwind from them in the grass... four of the seven pups immediately winded and went looking...this is the first lesson/test to help me in identifying what each pup is capable of and what comes natural to each one...I will repeat this step several more times before I move on to the next step... I really like the brindle markings on a few of those males. The Parkers are tight bred, and an outcross seems to really throw some awesome dogs sometimes, maybe from hybrid vigor is what some say. I don't know, sometimes the cross works and sometimes they're average. Mid like to see how a son of Joe produces because I have a son of Joe and expect alot from him. Title: Re: Progression Of My Pups Post by: Reuben on July 05, 2012, 09:00:41 pm thanks everyone...I was surprised that all the pups came out looking and acting right...I say this because of the different breeds involved...but I wanted to bring in a different breed to the mtn cur and then breed these back to mtn cur...eventually they will be having 7/8th mtn cur but selecting carefully so that hopefully I will retain some of the good qualities from the Parker cur...
I just gave up the pick pup to the stud owner and he picked one of my 3 top picks at this point...Also gave a female to a good friend and the other is going to Beeville to another good friend...we are in agreement as to who they will be bred if she turns out as a top hog dog... so that will leave me 4 and I am to trade a male for a female pup that will have about 1/2 of the blood from my old line of dogs...so I am happy about that... they yellow dog in the back ground in one of the pics is the Kemmer female and she is a decent hog dog is about it...she has lots of grit and a great winding nose... PigRig...I don't put much time on the pups...mostly shortcuts and tricks...a few minutes here and there...but I like swiiting in the back yard and watching them play and explore...just looking for any tell tell signs that will help me in learning how a pup will be when he gets a little older... back when I quit the dogs towards the end I was getting 100% hog dogs from a litter...but I line bred and inbred...and I tested all pups and only bred the very best...especially focused on the early starters and those that had the ability to find a pig pretty quick and to not have any quit in them...been back in it since 2010 and struck out a few times...but I think I am off to a good start with these pups...also getting a 10 month old male that has quite a bit of my old line in his background on top and bottom...very good pup but is very gritty and is a little on the small side...his sister is burning down the woods so I know it is in them... I believe there is one pup that will be sold and he has been reserved from a few months back... Justin...waiting a few weeks to test the ability to take a liver track...then I will test for winding and finding...also will test for natural ranging...and then try the bay pen a few times to see which one or ones take naturally to hogs...I like to breed dogs that are natural to what I test for...many folks don't believe in this but I am a firm believer.... Title: Re: Progression Of My Pups Post by: Reuben on July 05, 2012, 09:31:22 pm i like that second male and the female runt ;D that second male has a little more leg on him and He is my #4 favorite right now...the runt female is everyone's favorite but she is going to a good hunting home...and if she hunts right will be bred to a dog that has 50% of my favorite line of dogs... ;D then I will get a female pup back.. What I like about her is her good legs and natural muscle tone with that slick coat...she is built right for a natural bob tailed pup...I like every thing about her except for her natural bob tail...I like breeding to long tailed dogs and a bob tailed every now and then is ok... Yea Dustin...I don't mind helping in any way I can... Title: Re: Progression Of My Pups Post by: justincorbell on July 05, 2012, 10:29:19 pm Reuben as far as natural ranging goes, do you pretty much take em to the woods and walk with em, watchin who leaves out and who stays closer? I do this with my 3 pups quite a bit now, my female is startin alot stronger then my 2 knothead males but females have always picked up on things faster for me in both bird and hoghunting dogs.

"the sun is shining somewhere in texas" -Jason Boland I take the pups straight from the pen to the dog box because I want them fresh and ready to go do something...then in some nice open woods I drop them out and watch them...I don't pet them or give them any attention...What I want to see is all the pups leaving out...once I see who is the leader I will leave that one at home and see who will step up...but at 4 months old and the followers follow then I am ok with that at that pups age...either way a stroll in the woods with the pups just to observe them in action is also a good training exercise... Title: Re: Progression Of My Pups Post by: Mike on July 10, 2012, 10:47:48 pm Pups look good Reuben, what Parker dog did you breed to?
Title: Re: Progression Of My Pups Post by: BA-IV on July 10, 2012, 11:35:03 pm Pretty sure he bred to a male Jarred owned that was made off the Joe x Sassy cross. Larry owns the Joe dog and I think he owns the male to now.

Larry owns the Joe dog and I think he owns the male to now. Mike...BA-I4 is right...The son of the Joe dog was named Larry but now that he is in Larry's yard I am thinking he has a new name...but he is the pups sire... Title: Re: Progression Of My Pups Post by: Reuben on July 14, 2012, 10:58:43 am I saw something yesterday that got my blood pumping...
I had the big dogs running loose and they were running and play fighting ...the redbone pit cross sounded like a freight train when he opened up... two of the small pups ran for cover and 3 pups fired up and bayed the big dogs...I didn't see any fear in the pups... and no back up...I believe the bay style I like is going to be there...they are not quite 7 weeks... Title: Re: Progression Of My Pups Post by: Reuben on July 26, 2012, 09:00:43 pm the runt female can really travel at almost full speed when looking in the yard for scattered pieces of meat...I call her "FLY" like a great hunting female I had at one time who was also the runt of her litter...same style of pup...
The pups are 2 days shy of 9 weeks and they are now trying to control the food bowl...I don't have the time to teach them to eat together harmoniously but I stand by when I have the time... Today, 2 pups went at it for a long time in an all out war in the back yard...totally silent like pitbulls and finally another pup came in and one got double teamed...that is when I stepped in and broke it up...I really like the whole litter, they look like pure mtn cur and they have a ton of bay...they are ready for a small 30-60 pound shoat...I need to buy one if anyone has a decent shoat in brazoria county... Last night I put the mama and her 9.5 month old son (Tonka) in a bay pen and they both looked awesome...they would have taken the prize on the old dog young dog bay...well...probably not at uncle earls...I will try to get them on video before I sell the pup and post it on here... Title: Re: Progression Of My Pups Post by: RyanTBH on July 27, 2012, 09:04:02 am I like that black male a lot! Keep us updated on em Reuben! Good lookin' little pot lickers!
Title: Re: Progression Of My Pups Post by: Reuben on July 27, 2012, 01:23:15 pm I like that black male a lot! Keep us updated on em Reuben! Good lookin' little pot lickers! Thanks Ryan...he is one of my favorites...he is the fastest pup right now and looks to be the alfa at this time... Title: Re: Progression Of My Pups Post by: Reuben on September 27, 2012, 06:24:34 am not much to report...I cut out the "hidden in the yard" chunks of liver because they were pretty good at it. The black male is my favorite because he is built the best and has a good coat and disposition...he has a good nose and was second best at finding and locating...probably because of his speed, nose and brain power...The black female (the runt) is the fastest and has a good nose as well. She makes it all look easy...
I ran a few drags for them starting at 10 weeks and they didn't click...tried it 4 or 5 days in a row and no go...At 4 month of age (last week) I ran a drag and then turned them loose...The black female ran the track several times but couldn't locate...the black male did almost as good... I have been pretty busy with my work but they are ready for a pig in the bay pen...My work will free up the first week in November so I will get a pig then for the bay pen...These pups have been wanting to bay something for several months now...They have been snacking on a few pig heads here and there so they know the smell... One of the brindle pups has a ton of heart. He is not the biggest nor the strongest but he is top dog by sheer determination...I had a dog like that before when it came to who was top dog or who could run the longest and the hardest it was him...this brindle pup reminds me of him... Sometime soon I will take them out and find out if any have that natural desire to go hunt in the woods... I am always on the look out for natural ability... Good deal Hope to see some pictures soon I will post some pics sometimes soon... Title: Re: Progression Of My Pups Post by: Reuben on January 13, 2013, 05:42:57 pm well...running behind on training these pups...but I do like the black ones best...and the black male pup has been in the woods 3 times...first time didn't do much and the second time he rolled out with the big dogs...today was his third time out and once I turned him out he rolled out with my 2 dogs and they went out of range on my receiver...it was raining and cold and I made the decision to follow friends and there dogs...had to turn back because the water got deeper...finally located the dogs and I couldn't get to them and the dogs had split up...long story short the black pup was bayed up with one of the dogs and he made the race...almost 5 hours...they had a big big boar bayed and I had to call them off...hated to do that but had to get out...the older dog swam the slough back and the pup jumped right in and swam back right behind him so I wasn't feeling the cold about that time...today he earned his name...his name is Smoke...the 2 Smokes before him wore some big shoes so time will tell...now that deer season is over I have to work with these pups...
will post some pics soon... Title: Re: Progression Of My Pups Post by: KevinN on January 13, 2013, 06:55:15 pm Good deal Reuben....sure is nice when a young 'un shows you something.
