Title: Conformation!?
Post by: TShelly on July 16, 2012, 07:57:43 am
If you could put together the perfect dog in your mind how would they be built, size, weight, color??? ... And why would they be built that way??

Post a picture up if you have a dog that has perfect conformation in your eye

Should be lots of different answers as styles and terrain of your hunting area a lot of time dictates  what type of dog you prefer

Confirmation wise this dog was perfect in my eyes. Long legs strong as an ox lots of lung.  75 or so pounds maybe a hair more.  26 inches at the shoulder.  Perfect for me can still maneuver in the brush run like the wind and hold a big hog and keep his feet on the ground.  NOW if he would have been full catch he would have been perfect for me.  This is an older pic of him still sorta a pup but gives u an idea.  (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y114/purebreedcolt/SU1HMDA0MjAtMjAxMTAyMDMtMTcyMC5qcGc.jpg)

I'm a pretty big stickler on the way I like my dogs to look...form follows function.

Of the dogs we've produced, this one was might near perfect in my eyes.  65lb range, lots of leg, high arched back, wide barrel chest, cat feet, tight flank, muscled to the hilt.  I also like a big blocky head...something about those narrow headed, long snout dogs just turns me off.

Deuce was a good one, and he was even more of a looker when working the fire out of a hog!

RIP Deuce.

I like a dog a little more compact, good legs little more on the mid range height 19-20 inches 40-50 lbs and plenty of wind and drive. (http://img.tapatalk.com/aefd67ca-2c1e-7839.jpg)

My male blue lacy, nice head, good nose 19 3/4 tall 44.5 lbs and plenty of
Drive nose and grit.

I sure took a liking to this Catahoula from the first time I seen him. I just like the way he was built. This is Monaghan's Catahoulas
Casey's Tuff Enough. I was lucky to breed one of my gyps to him and get 2 pups off him before he past away. The black and tan Cat is his
pup. He's starting to look and act like him.

Block headed and legs for days with a streamlined torso built to do some traveling. Around 65 to 80 lbs.

Do I seriously have to put preferred color confirmation?  ^-^

This is my female Catahoula, Monaghan's Abby. She is double Sandhill bred. Sandhill is a old line of tightly bred Cats. I like the way she is put together. Her only fault in my eyes are her small ears which sometimes pops up in the Sandhill dogs. Other than that I wouldn't change
anything about her.

These are some good looking dogs and varying confirmations. Jimco I like that gyp.  Bryant your Duece dog is probably the best looking dog I've ever seen. Were you able to get puppy's out of him before he passed?

Tbob.. She looks familiar :)

I like a medium size dog, 50-70's. I feel once you start getting any bigger they lose that cat like athleticism I love. Tight flank, longer than normal chest cavity, tight skinned with above average muscle definition. Long legs!! One thing we cherish is SPEED and I want the dog to be as streamlined as possible BUT with a big ol square head! I'm with Bryant I've never cared much for those pencil headed dogs, they never seem to have as cold of a nose as the block-headed curs. Above average length in the ears, I hate high setting ears.

Any color other than yellow, but we do have some 'albinos' from time to time

These two are pretty close to what I think is perfect in my mind. I will be crossing these two next if the opportunity presents itself

This guy right here, he has his summer weight on in this pic and when he gets into running shape he is about 10# lighter and moves like a free safety.

I prefer smaller dogs and I prefer females.  I like them dark in color, about 38 to 42 lbs.  I live them very athletic, quick and fast through the woods.  Must have good pads on thier feet.

Here are pics of my two favorites:

TShelley and I have very similar taste as far as how a dog should be built. These arent great pics of her but I would have to say my Pistol dog fits pretty closely to that criteria.

Always thought this dog had real nice conformation.I like a dog to be 45/60 lbs with long legs, kinda short bodied, longer ear.I wont have a big blocky headed cur dog.I have only seen a few that had a really good nose, and all of them were too rough for me.Leave them big bulldog heads on them bulldogs,IMO.I really like the build of a running hound,Walker,Trigg,July.

I just acquired this dog in a trade from Mr. Witherspoon. I believe he is about the best put together yella dog i've owned and so far he hunts perfect for me. Long legs, tight flank, good head, built to run.

This is pretty girl, 1/2 pit 1/2 ridgeback, she is built like a brick chithouse, solid muscle and can flat out run when she wants to. Im hopin she will leg/tone up a bit with more time in the woods, she is not in good hunting shape right now and a tad over weight.
