i just recently switched to ivomec in place of dog heart worm preventative and have been giving it orally. I have had people tell me to give it orally and others that tell me to inject it right under the skin. Those that inject say that they do so because if you put it in there mouth they could spit it up or throw it up later on. But when you research it there are alot more people giving it orally. What is the best way???

Mu vet recommends orally, jsut about everyone i know does it this way.  never heard of anyone giving a dog ivomec sub q

thats what i was looking for, if vets recommend orally then thats what ill do. my vet wont comment when i asked, so im in need good vet now too.

I use a 3cc syringe. Draw your dosage, then suck the rest full of water out of the dog's water bucket. Grab them around the snout, with their head up and squirt it down their throat. Works great.

Orally .10cc per 10lbs.  

I go sub q once a month with no problems. I do this because I know it works. I'm skeptical of oral applications of ivermectin. I am not against using it orally I would just like to see a study done on both ways and the effectiveness. 1/10 cc per 20 lbs and cut it in half with water so it's not so hot.

The reason for doing subcutaneous inj,
Is the absortion of the product.

It gets into the system faster , but basically has the same result.

It does work for me that way , been doing it for over 25 yrs.

I give it oral.....sub q works also but more of a pain in the but.

Most people overdose, big time, with Ivomec. The heartworm prevenative you get from the Vet has a dosage of 1/10th of a CC per 40 lbs. I mix 1CC of Ivomec with 9CCs of propylene glycol and give 1CC per 40lbs. The propylene glycol is a mixing agent and a preservative. Once mixed it will stay mixed and not separate. Three or four hunters could split a bottle of ivomec and make it last a year or more.

I hear injecting it will get ticks too. Orally does not. I use the paste. I have all my wormers in paste. Cut slices of bread in half. Put Peanut butter on part of each piece and the paste on the other and fold it like a folded PB&J just half the size. Give each dog one piece and the worming is done with no problems. With the liquid  have put it on the bread with peanut butter too. Just put all the peanut butter on first so you don't get the meds in your PB. I only switched to paste because I could not find the small syringes last time.

Great idea on the bread and peanut butter. I'm gonna try that next time. It's important to note that any time you ask your vet or another dog man for dosage on meds alway ask the concentration as well. Most of what we buy over the counter ivomec is 1 percent. I know on some paste concentration varies widely.

I hope my memory is correct, but I am pretty sure these numbers are correct.  When giving Ivomec subcutaneously it is about 75% effective against worms. If you give it by mouth it is close to 99% effective.

I squirt it on a piece of white bread and let the bread soak up the Ivomec like a sponge. Sometimes I pour some gravy on the bread for the picky eaters.

I give 3/4 ml per 50 pounds in order to get whipworms In addition to roundworms and hookworms. I also only use name brand Ivomec.

Where can I fnd the propylene glycol to dilute the ivomec with?  Is there different types of ivomec?  WHich is the best to use for dogs?

The vets have wrap on just about anything labeled for canine use.  I use 1 percent ivomec from the co op. It will only give doses for bovine and sheep etc. But me personally I dose .5 cc ( ml)  per 25 lbs. Then draw up a little water I with it and go at them orally. Next month m gonna try the peanut butter on the bread though. Seems easier
