Title: Putting a dog in the pen for the first at Bremond? Post by: TrueBlueLacys on May 07, 2009, 02:01:22 pm The NLDA is trying to get some members to the Bremond to show off our Lacys in the bay pen. Not that any of us have bay pen dogs worth showing off, but we're looking for an excuse to hang out and pick on Savoy, so this seems like a good opportunity ;)
We have one member with 10 or 11-month-old female Lacy he has worked on squirrels. So she knows you're supposed to bark at wild animals. But she's never seen a pig before. He's in Arkansas, so we won't be able to get her on a pig beforehand. He would like to bring her to the bay just to see what she thinks of hogs. For those who have been to the bay or are organizing it, do you think this would be a good idea? What are the hogs like? I'm willing to run my dog with her as a ringer in the Puppy Bay, if that's allowed, and in the Young and Old. But would that be safe? I know there is always the possibility of a dog getting hurt, but obviously there is a difference between taking a risk and asking for trouble. Those are good hogs in Bremond for the most part and a dog/pup with no hog savvy may get more than what you bargain for.
You may get lucky and draw the right hog because there is a couple they use for puppies that may be suitable for her but I just cant recommend it with the "luck of the draw" factor. I bet if you ask nicely, the owner may let your member's pup look a selected hog after the event is over. A little training session in other words. Wouldn't hurt to ask I guess since he is driving all the way from Arkansas. Title: Re: Putting a dog in the pen for the first at Bremond? Post by: hoghunterswife on May 07, 2009, 03:02:32 pm thats a dicision you have to make but if the pup has never seen a pig before i wouldn't start it on the pigs at bremond you don't want her to get rolled and lose her confidence on her first pig . she should start small and build her up. the guy who runs this event is a good guy so like boarninja he may let you run after the event is over to see what she will do

But this sounds like more woods dogs and fresher hogs. I'm not worried about her age, several people will be bringing younger pups, but all of them have played with pigs before. I'd hate for this guy to get his puppy squashed.

Post by: uglydog on May 08, 2009, 09:50:29 am Ask the man from Arkansas if he would be able to come a day early and make an appointment with Mr.Mason to do a little training in the pen with a choice of hog size and caliber and then decide what the pups qualities are and then go from there.
