Title: Used Dodge Diesels
Post by: mod93dirt on August 08, 2012, 11:59:23 pm
I recently started working at a dodge dealership bodyshop, and once I have 60 days in, I am eligible for the employee discounts. On trade-ins, they wont put anything with over 100k on the lot. They wholesale them out. On the wholesale cars, we can buy them for 300-500 over what they have in them. Boss man says some good deals can be made from the wholesale lot.

Anyways, I have been looking for months for a 4x4 7.3 Ford, but havent been able to find the one that I want at the price I wanna pay. I have seen a bunch of nice looking Dodge trade ins sitting on the lot. But I dont really know nothing about the dodges. Im looking for a 4dr, 4x4, single rear wheel truck.  Within the last 10yrs or so, are there any models that are more desirable than others? Any models to avoid, kind of like a 6.0L Ford? Any common issues to look for within any of the models?

Never really considered getting a dodge before, but if I could get a good deal on a nice one, I probably would.

Get you a 5.9 and you will be in heaven! The 6.7's are great trucks but the emmissions bs hinders them, if you get rid of the dpf filters and egr valve add a good tbe exhaust and intake then the 6.7 is pretty much a beefed up 5.9.

I own a 6.7 and spent almost 3g after buyin the truck to get it "right" in my mind but now i absolutely love it!

X2
5.9 is an excellent engine and 150,000 miles is just getting it broke in good. The dodge problems are injectors and front ends ( tie rods bearings etc ). I think the Manual trannys are better in the 5.9's myself. If your mechanically inclined you can change injectors and fix the front end yourself when problems pop up. 7.3 is also a very good engine I'm not familiar with common problems on those.

I've owned both a 5.9 and a 6.7 the 5.9 I loved it my grandpa drives it now it has over 300k on it and no problems at all other than the caddalitic converter got clodded up took it out and straight piped it no problems since then I love my 6.7 as Justin said above its just a beefed up 5.9 after all the deletes are done

I have a 2002 5.9L auto tranny.  Everything is awesome but the transmission it slips in and out of over drive between 45 and 55.  Ivery annoying and I'm not fixing it till it completely gone.  Any year is good but get a manual transmision.   Don't settle for an auto like I did you will regret it.

I have pulled with a few Fords and thought they did good. I put a load on my Dodge and I drove off like it was nothing. Now I know why people that have a Cummins only want a Cummins.

I don't even know which motor mine has but it's a one ton 4 door 2003 with 323,000 miles I average 20 mpg.  Wouldn't believe it if I didn't check it myself!   Change the oil every 7500 mi, have put 3 water pumps, fly wheel,  bearings in front wheels, 3 sets of shocks!  Three sets of break pads.. It's a great truck!

Your truck has the 5.9 Common rail, but in 2003 there were three different versions, and 4 different transmissions.

From what I remember from 2003, here are the available combos.
235hp  California, offered in a 5 spd NV4500, or 47re auto
245hp  Standard Output  offered in a 5 spd NV4500, or 47re auto
305hp  High Output , only available in 6 spd NV5600, or 48re auto

That is most likely not your tranny, probably an APPS sensor. I've got the same deal happening on my truck, it causes the torque converter to lock and unlock, which makes it feel like your tranny is slipping.

I've got a 4-door 1-ton I'll sell you! 19,000 original miles. Garage kept. Just re-upolstered the seats with saddle leather cause the old ones were starting to dry rot. Not a single problem with it. It has a 360 long block with and Edelbrock carb and dual exhaust, air shocks, a/c cd player. Got original reciept, window sticker, and everything. Bought by an old man thta lived down the road from me at Sour Lake Motor Company in 1985. He never drove it. I have a '97 1-ton with a 5.9 with the P-pump and I'm going to put that motor in this one. Going to be awesome. I had 4 cowhides that I made the seats out of and left the brands in the head rests. Got a buddy that does leather work that had a deal to cut out a Dodge emblem and I put that in the head rest also.

I need to take an updated pic of the seats since I finished them. They're pretty amazing.
