Title: Short hair pointer
Post by: gsphunter on August 15, 2012, 01:50:23 pm
Any one ever hunt with a German short hair pointer?  I've got one who is about a year old and 65 lbs with a lot of drive in him and he has a good nose, I'd like to turn him into a bay dog.  Any thoughts?  Ive heard they can be pretty gritty?

my hunting partner has one and he finds a lot of hogs for us. he's not real gritty but will defintely get on a ear the with the catchdog & ranges out real good.  but doesnt have near the bottom of a cur. he also has a gsp/cur cross pup and he's doing real good for a pup. if he shows interest hunt him...

The Aussie breed Bull Arabs consisted of English bull terrierXgreyhoundXEnglish pointerX German short hair pointer. They love to cross up theyre dogs to get the style they want. But the point is they saw the potential of the pointer breeds a long time ago and have been useing the pure form with successs for years. I hunt an English pointer myself and hes turned out to be a pretty handy dog to have on the ground.
Started him off in my pen. First he bayed but when encourged by the other dogs to catch, he pretty much just runs in and lugs up now. The first real hunt I took him on he struck and cought a 130# sow full of pigs. Hes definatly not the hardest dog I have and hell probly bay a big hog but if he finds, catches on the small stuff, and helps out on the big ,hes got a place in my yard.lol
Give that dog of yours a chance, you may be surprised

Well mine is a good one. He will catch about 150 an under. Has more bottom than any cur I ever had. Hunts more like a hound will get gone. I just hunt him and a bulldog for back up. And I would love to have one more just like him. Good luck

I hunted one for a while had a lot of drive would stay busy til he just couldn't go anymore. He had a good disposition round the other dogs and was very fast. He got killed bout 3 weeks ago on a big boar but I bred him to my plott gyp she had the pups last week can't wait to see how they turn out!

I had a male that was a big pointer right at 75 lbs and skinny as a rail. Couldnt keep him like he needed to be no matter how much food and wormer he got. He ran like the wind and stayed busy. I only had him strike two hogs for me before a boar got him. But he was on allot of bays and a few races. I liked him enough to buy a female gsp pup. The pup just turned a year old this month. She stays super busy but has been pointing pigs instead of barking sometimes. The jury is still out on her.
