1-3 seldom 4 on ground 1- 2 catch dogs usually only send in one catch dog, second catch dog for split bays, or plan on hunting all day.    Hunt by myself a lot and will only have 1-2 dogs on ground, 1 catch dog.  That is all you want to lead out of the woods after wrestling a hog, and less to catch when they roll over, & less split bays.

Our hogs run so bad we start with 2 -3 dogs on the ground. When one of them gets a race going then we will find the track with the garmin where it crosses a road or levee and put fresh dogs on after a while. As the dogs fall out of the race we pick them up. And usually send 2 cd to the bay.......if we get them to stay bayed long enough. Our hogs are high Eurasian bred and we dog em often.

Back in the day we would run 4 to 5 bay dogs and 1 catch dog because there was usually 4 of us hunting together. I know that's a lot of dogs on the ground but the area we hunted was hog rich and we caught a lot Of hogs. If we had pups to work we would try and only take a couple at a time and our dog on the ground number hit maybe 6. Sounds like alot but like i said, we caught alot of hogs and never really had any big issues. Guess cause there were so many humans there too, lol. Come January it's going to get interesting, nothing but pups between Drew and I. Five pups on the ground and 1 or 2 experienced dogs from whoever we bring with us. Should have some interesting hunts and im sure it will be a good learning experience for everyone involved, lol. After we get the pups lined out (probably not till 2013) we'll cut the number back to 4 or so again with a couple for backup. That's the number I really like - 4 with a catch dog or two.
