Title: Sick dog
Post by: Curdog352 on August 21, 2012, 10:22:18 pm
It seemed like a couple days after hunting my running catchdog she just wasnt acting right. Not too energetic, pretty much not being herself. I remember reading a suggestion alittle bit ago where someone said to check for a tick in the ear or on the spine. I checked her ear and there was a huge full tick and 2 others that must've just started on her. So I removed them and did a full tick check. Let her run the yard instead of being in the pen. Long story short, she's dropped quite a bit of weight, and she's dehydrated. Yesterday I got her eating some chicken breast since thats all she seemed to even attempt to eat. She's drinking water. I'm trying to get her to drink some pedialite but not too successful. Today I just noticed she has blood in her urine, but she's doing much better. She meets me at the truck when I pull up and even jogging a bit. My question is do you think she might have a tick related disease? Cause she was perfectly fine all day hunting then afterwards she went down hill. The three other dogs I hunted with her are doing just fine and I found some ticks on them as well, none as big as that one she had though. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not really sure what it could be.. Dehydration though u can take red Gatorade or pedialite and stick it right behind the neck and shoot her up with it..( the same as when they have parvo) keep her pretty full on fluids and hydrated I'm sure she'll fight off the rest.. Goodluck

Don't inject gator aid. Use saline. Force some calf jump start down the throat if you Have too. I am no vet,but injecting gator aid doesn't seem very ideal.

Thanks for the advice guys. Yeah I think shes getting better slowly each day. I just pulled up from work and she greeted me at the driveway. Warren it was hot when we hunted and we hunted til about noon. But the dog finnels were really moist when you got inside them and thats where the hogs were staying. So she stayed cool but I'm pretty sure thats where all the ticks came from too. She was in on one catch but didn't seem wore out or overheated afterwards.

She ended up getting worse, so i took her to the vet. They did blood work and checked her out. He thought it was a uterus infection, but wasn't 100%. He said they recommend spaying her and I was fine that, then he told me my bill would be alittle over $400! I said no thank you! After questioning him for about 5 minutes I still can't figure out how a normal spaying cost around $75 can jump to $400. Anyways the other option was to treat it with antibotics that yet again he wasn't sure if it woulld fix her. There's alot of being unsure, which I'm not crazy about. I ended up trying the antibotics and the final bill was $200. He got the blood work back and said that's what it was. All is good now. She's slowly put her weight back on and getting her energy back. Thanks again for all the advice I get from you guys on this forum with this situation and all my others.

Get  some injectable penicillin just to keep n the refrigerator . Always good to have some , u can go to revivalanimalhealth.com and they have penicillin, syringes, and if u look and see wat antibiotic your vet put her on, u can order thise pills too from there, they sell them as fish antibiotics.  Jeffers is another mail order place where u can get good supplies. Good luck with your dog, sounds like she turned the corner.

Yeah I researched the pills and shots he gave me, they totaled around $80.00. So I'm not gonna complain too much with the vet visit, bloodwork, and the antibiotics for $200.00. Yeah i always have penicillin in the fridge. Thats my go to medicine it cures all..from snake bites to broken bones lol.

Gatoraid is not the ideal fluid to inject. I wouldnt recommend it.
