Title: Re: Spoon Bill Post by: craig on May 19, 2009, 07:41:59 am yeh you can eat them cut out all the red just keep the white meat, and there pretty good. we didnt keep a single fish that day.
not as good as some smaller fish like crapie or bass Title: Re: Spoon Bill Post by: matt_aggie04 on May 19, 2009, 03:43:57 pm I saw some guys doing that same thing on TV the other day Craig, and it was in NE Oklahoma. Interesting critters, those fish eat plancton not other fish so the only to catch them is to snag them. Prehistoric looking things for sure.
Title: Re: Spoon Bill Post by: craig on May 19, 2009, 10:38:36 pm thats cool Matt id like to see that, yeh snagging is a big deal up here when the water is running good.

"The State of Texas has protected the paddlefish since 1977. It is considered a threatened species. It is unlawful to catch, kill or harm paddlefish in Texas." Title: Re: Spoon Bill Post by: hogtied on July 31, 2009, 10:27:50 am isnt that the same as a spoon bill catfish? caught a big un on a trot line on livingston a while back, was advised to throw it back so I did... it is illegal in texas... Isnt snagging illegal around here too? ya clint there are some good ones below the dam and in the lake as well
Title: Re: Spoon Bill Post by: mradel on July 31, 2009, 12:36:47 pm What is snagging
Title: Re: Spoon Bill Post by: hogtied on July 31, 2009, 12:41:24 pm the term i use it for is when you tie a few hooks on the line a foot or so apart and jerk it thru the water foul hooking schooling fish...
Title: Re: Spoon Bill Post by: mradel on July 31, 2009, 12:47:35 pm OK I have never used the method but can see how it would be productive on larger hard to catch fish. I will have to try that some time ore is it not legal in Texas.
Title: Re: Spoon Bill Post by: hogtied on July 31, 2009, 12:50:23 pm Im pretty sure you better do it at nighttime in Texas ;) Im not positive but i always heard it was not legal... anybody no for sure?

Title: Re: Spoon Bill Post by: NechesBobcat on March 26, 2010, 06:38:18 am I haven't caght one yet but a buddy of mine foul hooked one below the gates at livingston. I have seen people over there snagging fish making it look like they were working a big jig. It's funny to watch them. They'll look around to make sure no one is looking, give the rod a big jerk, let it fall a couple seconds, jerk it again, and they'll never pull the fish out of the water until they are off the hook and in a dip net.
My grandpa said when he was little they used to catch paddlefish in a gill net in old lakes off the river. I have seen some swimming around. |
