Title: Wild pig won't eat
Post by: hog bit on September 06, 2012, 04:01:27 am
I put a Sow in the pen the other day, and she hasn't eaten a thing. What do y'all do to get them to eat?

From the looks of it she might drop some pigs pretty soon. I bet she will eat sooner or latter when she gets hungry.

Dave, I put a small shoat in the pen with the one I got from you and it never would eat. He lasted about 2 weeks then died. Try feeding it
green plant stuff or maybe some cattle cubes made from dried plants .

Couple things to check.

Alot of the really wild ones will sull up for a few days and drop a rediculous amount of weight.
Also some folks try and put corn in feeder or trough off the ground instead of dumping it on ground.
And......I have seen a few wild wild ones that just wont eat in captivity.  If that's the case...mark her and cut her loose before she gets to weak to travel.

Good luck.

I catch live and Pen a lot. The first few days they don't usually eat. After that i have found the bigger the hog the more they won't eat and i will butcher them before they lose to much weight and die. They are all different and you have to realize they are stressed out from being penned. The least amount of time you spend near the pen for a while the better. Feed and leave. I use whole corn and i feed table scraps. I would say from looking at her she is going to drop some babies and that could have something to do with it. She is not really big so i would guess she will be alright with time but your pen is open for sight out so mabe not.. If she does have babies expect her to charge everytime someone goes near and they will trample and kill the babies doing it. Just keep plenty of clean water for her to drink and try the whole corn. Another thing that helps is to find something and block the view at the bottom. I have old conveyor belt around my pen. Some people use metal roofing, shade cloth ect, It keeps them calmer and less likly to charge the pen when you go near. About 3 ft up usually is best on the outside. The bigger ones with more attitude will run and ram the sides a few times anyway but usually settle in. Good luck.

Any of the ones we've stuck in our pen have always eaten willingly. Our pen is in a quiet spot though towards the back of our property, and for the first few days we dump the food on the ground opposed to a trough.

Table scraps in the sun for about a day always works for me I've had the problem with all the hogs I've penned but she looks as if she might drop soon...

Thanks for all of the replies.  She started eating on Thursday after almost a week of not eating.  This is my buddy's pen.

I called him yesterday to see if she started eating, and he told me he has a whole new problem.  Animal control came by his place.  The animal control person gave him a misdemeanor summons for animal cruelty because the pig has an injured ear and he had not taken the pig to the vet.  What is the world coming to?
