EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

Had a good hog dog and he was snakebit a few weeks ago and didnt make it. Only had one cause im just really startin out, but was thinkin of giving coon hunting a try. But have also heard it can get boring by several people just because its not as big of a reward for running through the woods. Also been wanting a walker hound for a while. Have also heard theyre not the best hog dogs because theyre open on track. Any thoughts?

Really sorry to hear your bad luck. If it's at all possible for you to forget about running dogs, do it now, take up golf or fishing or anything else. Hog dogs will get in your blood and ruin you.

If you just can't live without runnin dogs, start with squirrel or rabbit dogs, way mire fun and exiting than some stupid Ol bawl mouthed coon hounds! And with a good feist squirrel dog you won't be hopping near as many fences or having to go miles and miles to find your dog.

yeah he was a beautiful dog too. all white kemmer cur dog. pretty dang good dog as well. and no i wont be gettin out of runnin dogs. my older cousin got me hooked on it when i started going with him. then i got mine and it made it that much more rewarding when we wouldd get one. was thinkin about a coon dog, but it doesnt seem that fun to run in the woods, shoot a coon out of the tree and carry it back. but when u get on a hog, its a huge thrill, especially on a big one. i believe hogs is what ill stick with though. plus, no one around where i live runs coons anymore, and its pretty obvious as too why. its just a dang ole coon.

we never shot the coons when i used to go. we let the dogs take them out. we would climb the tree and kick it out to the dogs. takes a good dog to whip a coon and ive seen several coons whip the dogs that didnt get a good hold the first time. but theres more excitment hog hunting when u get one caught.

Don't count out a walker as a hog dog. It's not always the case but if you can find a good line of walkers that have some speed and good drive they make some good dogs. One of the most well known dogs in my area is a walker dog. Silent on track and is the real deal.

Where are you located?

Ive got a walker gyp that is silent until in a hogs face, shes very gritty, will put teeth on one to stop it from running.  Apparently a lot of walkers are open on track.  She is a little too long range for me but always comes back so i guess thats whatever. 

Sounds like u need a jagd. Easy to feed,very loyal,and straight hunter/killer. Can be trained to hunt or track anything living or dead. If you're just dead set on a hound though look into plotts. As far as coon hunting it can be very rewarding. Nothing like listening to a good hound race in my opinion
