I had the same thing happen years ago but my gyp let me pull them out with my leathermans tool right after it happened. Really can't hold down? Dang man, that seems like only option.

Either bunny is a term used to slip up on somebody with an either soaked rag and cover their nose n mouth till they pass out. You could also try using nitrous oxide to put him under

You might think im crazy but i had a big ridgeback dog that would reach around and bite when being worked on even with sedation. We laid him on a clothes ironing board, put a towell over him so the tape wouldnt stick to his hair and then duct taped him firmly to the baord.  When the job was done we just sliced along the tape and it pulled away freely from the towell. He couldnt move a muscle and we had our hands free to work on him.

I never tried this on a dog but one time I accidentally overdrenched a goat with propylene glycol he was drunk as a skunk I wonder if u couldn't drench your dog with some everclear or whiskey drunk him up real good then work on him?

Dont own dogs if you can't afford to care for them.

The towel and duct tape should work. I've used belts and an ironing board but I bet a towel and duct tape would work better.I would use a piece if soft rope around top and bottom jaw and pull them apart and use some long needle nose pliers to pull out the quills. It might work, it's worth a try.

With all due respect,  If you have money to fix whatever could be wrong with your dog at all times more power to you. We are all blue collar working men. I can't speak for him but I afford to care for my dogs which means food, water, monthly meds, house etc, but I do not allocate money for the vet. It is one of those things that I cant afford but if it happens I will find a way, and I have done it many times. That doesn't mean I should get rid of some dogs.

No one knows this guys situation but him. How bout helping him out instead of tearing him down.

Dont own dogs if you can't afford to care for them.

Comments like this aggravate me.

How can you tell another man what he can and can't own because he wants to save money or has something more important in his life going on. I've done work on my dogs, cattle, and horses since I could remember.

Poor men have poor ways, but that doesn't make you any better cuz your ways differ then his  ;)

Sorry if it offends you guys. I did not tear anybody down nor did I disrespect anybody. All I did was simply state my opinion, just like you have done.

Everyones entitled to their opinion, that's what makes it great.

Your statement was, in the same sense, saying that if you can't afford a car or house by paying cash money, then you shouldn't own one. You're playing with borrowed money that you don't have. Same concept to a point.

When you can walk in that mans shoes and live his life, then you have the right to tell him what he can own. Your comment sounds like a typical comment from them animal rights people.
A similar comment was made when my dog broke his leg. I got it fixed at a cost $1500, which i would do again. I value my dogs more than ANY human, including myself. I place their needs before my own.

Guys I've been on this site for a few years now and have never insulted or had any issues with anyone. I think you are taking my comment way too personal. I do not have a silver spoon hanging out of my mouth or a bank account full of money. Worked for every penny Ive got just like you. I hunt and care for 9 dogs currently. Friday night I got on a rough boar. Tried to save some MONEY and did some field work myself. Evaluated the dog over the weekend and decided to take him to the vet this morning. Guess what, it wasn't in the budget but I will have to work harder this week and pay the bill. It's about responsibility and accountability. Controlling hog populations with dogs is a line of work that will sooner or later require medical attention and in my opinion its our job to be prepared to care for the dogs. I am no animal rights activist, but posts about people getting dogs banged up and not getting proper medical attention will dang sure get them stirred up. Nothing personal towards this guy, just speaking my mind.

Sorry if my opinion ruffled you too, but I said with all due respect. I can say anything I want after I say that, and you shouldnt take it to heart... or atleast that is what Ricky Bobby told me.

The laughter is for the ricky bobby comment.
JSH, i took it personal bc like said before, a similar comment was made. You are 100% correct in that eventualy higher med treatment will be required.

i can afford my dogs. but not an outrageous vet bill, if i can avoid it i will which is why i asked for help. i will choose to bite my tongue and accept any advice or guidance as i am young and dont know too much. but the negativity has no place here all i asked for was help, not your judgement of me

I just had a run in with a porcupine a few weeks ago. This was a first for me. Lionandboarhunter and hillcountry showed me an easy way to get the quills out of the dogs mouth. They simply took a 20oz coke bottle and opened the dogs mouth and put the cap end of the bottle in the back of the mouth so the top and bottom molars could bite on that. The coke bottle held the mouth open and just a little bit of pressure kept the dog from spitting the coke bottle out. I think the strapping the dog down along with the coke bottle trick and u will be in business. If u are doing it by yourself u might try a piece of 3/4 pvc pipe run across the left and right side molars and then tied back. Hopefully u get them out ok. Here is a pic of my dog about half way into the quill pulling. wish i would have thought to get a pic of the coke bottle deal. It was simple but made a world of difference...(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/18/jypu3eze.jpg)

Don't get caught up in the job and forget the dog.  It's helped me when doctoring dogs to talk to em almost like they are a person. Sounds funny and you might laugh, but you'll be surprised how well your dog responds and calms down once you start talking to it.

I always heard to cut the tips of the quills off and they'll just slide right out? Anyone know if its true?

Dang, rough deal inside mouth. My gyp just had them all over her muzzle. She came trotting up to me like ..... Dang, what the heck was that? Help me out here. I just put her between my legs, got out the leathermans and went to work. She didn't fight at all and it only took about 5 minutes. I got lucky I guess.

Yall are sensitive.

If you don't have the money or knowledge to fix your dogs this sport might be for you. Is that better ?

To the original poster, the above is not a jab at you. You will run into all sorts of problems hunting. Read a vet Manuel, they are very helpful.
Chloroform- I have heard it all now.

Well if the dog drinks it he's gonna feel better and if you drink it you'll feel better about the dog so I guess either way it's a win lol

I got in on this late. But I always talk to my dog and stay calm. I am used to large dogs. When dealing with the mouth I stradle the dog like a horse and hold him with my legs. I get firmer if the dog tries to get away but still gentle as to not be mean. I hold the collar with one hand and with the other hand I do what needs to be done. I will not have a dog that will bite me. The other calming thing besides talking is to cover the eyes. You want it to be as quite as possible with only your voice and the eyes covered to calm the dog. I have had to get help removing things from the mouth. It works better when I do the holding.

I only get puppies. I will always pick them up and hold the belly up like a baby. Not too long just so they know I am in control and I will not hurt them. I also do all the feeding and watering I can. As puppies I make sure to pet them when they are eating so they know I will not take their food. Then when they are hurt and they don't like what I am doing they still trust me.

I was going to suggest baby aspirin. It will take the edge off too it seems but with a mouth full of quills getting it administered may be a problem. Good luck
