Title: Starting ages?
Post by: WW-CC on September 17, 2012, 01:41:12 pm
Everyone has a few ideas of what ages they like to start workin pups on pigs and I wanna hear some people's thoughts! This is a blue bulldog that caught his first pig at 12 weeks so I believe wouldn't it just be more on the dog or do some of you stand by a certain age and this goes for strike dogs and cd's

Bulldogs are alittle different, their teeth don't set so you run a good chance of screwing his mouth up starting him that young.

As far as bay dogs go, it depends on the bloodline, but outta the 100 or so people claiming they got a puppy finding and baying at 4-5 months old, I doubt one or two actually have it.

x2 on the teeth .... I'm sure you have a lot of high hopes and intentions for this dog I wouldn't mess that up... I don't think your loseing anything by waiting ... imo .. best of luck

Is this brute as a pup or did you get another pup?

And as far as the pics go...I think the mods do there job pretty well so let them do it...if you don't like it just move along!

Just my thoughts on this

I start my bay dogs early. I'll show them a pig at 12 weeks or so and then every three weeks to a month after that until they are around 6 months. I'll try to do mock hunts after that. If the pups show the interest I'll start hunting them around 10-12 months.

Catch dogs won't even see a pig till they are 10-12 months. The teeth are the issue to me.

hell weller tell me how you feel when they pass more laws trying to kill hunting with dogs . you are either with us or against us . these pics of dogs being on little baby pigs is all it takes to get the anti's all in an uproar . and move along is one thing this ol man has never been guilty of . i am in the fight to keep this legal are you ????????????

^agreed. These pics should never be released to the public. The pig is not in a hunting situation it is in a baited situation.

Things like this will be all they need to get things rolling against dog hunters .. I'm with halfbreed again on moving on because if we all just move along then who is going to stand up for the right to use dogs to work.

X2...by all means show young cd's pigs and dogs baying to get their interest up and I wouldn't mind letting them start catching small shoats around 12 months but wouldn't really put them on pigs for a few months after that.  There teeth don't fully set until 14-16 months and I don't want to mess up the dogs mouth.  That being said I know several dogs started earlier that made great cd's but most of those don't have much left for teeth.

Typical of the "I've got a pit bulldog, now I'm a hog hunter young crowd" O0

you feed the dog and take care of him, so you do with him what you want dont worry about wat plp think, you will learn from yur misstakes just like we all have, and be careful on posting pics like that , cause you never no who will be knocking on yur door writing you a ticket.

i dont start a cd until 18 mnths or until there teeth are set.

I wouldn't call you holding a pig while he bites it "catching a hog" if that was the case we'd all have some badass catch dogs

A cd I like to see interest at an early age 6 months or so don't let them catch but want good interest if I'm going to feed them till it it time for them to catch.  A bay dog ill start on mock hunts or barking at a pig as soon as they want I will not hunt a dog before they are a year old though maybe more depending on the dog.
