Post by: Joey78 on September 23, 2012, 07:07:26 pm
Well y'all know I'm new to the sport and I got my self 2 4month old cur/pit/cat puppy's and took them out to
My buddies and had a 30lb hog and drug it bout 40 yards away from them and let them go find it and they found it and stated to go run up and nip at it bark at it then the bigger one of the 2 ran up and locked up on the ear and it took a good bit to get him off but I think they did good for there first Tim around a hog hope I'm on the right track to training them
Any input and critizem would be helpful thank y'all!

Being the cross they are there probably gonna catch every time. May want to have pig in small pen or cage and let them wind/track it. I'm thinking bout the teeth. Same as bulldog, don't really want them catchin hard till teeth set in. JMO

Yea I was thinking bout there teeth but wasn't worried really because there kinda shy but he started with just nipping and barking but then he just locked on so should sience I don't have a pen just have the pig tied and staked and drop them down wind and let them find it and how could I get him to stop catching  but be kinda be gritty  because I have a catch dog

What I'm pretty much asking is how do I need to train these dogs becaus I'm kinda flying by the seat of my pants with these puppy's and just want to do the best I can!!

What your doin is good. Let them wind. Do drags and let them track. Same as you've been doin. Then get them to the woods with some older dogs. I try and wait till their around 10 months, sometimes it's hard though  ;D

Oh, as far as getting them not to catch. There's a fine line there. I would just let them do what they do. Having bulldog in the blood, it would be really hard to stop them from catching a small to medium size hog without jeopardizing their natural prey drive. JMO

So I should just let them do what they want on the smaller pigs and y'all think on the bigger hogs he will learn not catch so much and just be gritty and try not to let them catch the training pigs till there older because of there teeth and y'all think the one that catches will be able to sniff out hogs  because he lT looks like he is tring to sniff and find them ? I'm just trying learn as much as I can so I don't
Mess up and I want to do good for my pups

i have a cat/pit and he strikes his own and is straight catch until the hog is about as big as a cow lol hes still young but he has struck so im sure yours could be tracking..how we keep ours from roughing up training pigs is if its small enough we put it in a wire dog kennel at the end of the drag so they cant put teeth on it.

I'm starting to work some pups in a bay pen too, but my shoat is larger (bout 50 #'s) and he's giving my 2 pups a pretty ruff go of it. maybe we should swap shoats. lol   I plan on taking a older dog next time and let him work on the shoat and hopefully that'll take some of the fight out of him.  But you might consider getting a larger shoat with a little attitude and that may help your porblem.

Well I did some drags around my house cuz I couldn't make it to my buddies land and now all the pups want to do is wine in there cage in the house till I get kennels built so I let them out cuz that ushley means they have to go to the bathroom and all they do is run and smell where the drags where I really hope this is a good sign !!
