Title: What's up with all the pigs for sale?
Post by: reatj81 on October 01, 2012, 09:28:31 am
The buyers won't by the small ones so why is everyone trying to sell them on here?    Kind of like a bunch of pups out of unproven dogs!  Everyone thinks going to make some money selling them.  Go ahead and feed them a few weeks and then decide to give them away, after you put some high dollar feed in them!    Why not give them away & be done with?   Help someone out!   Heck most of the guys that are trying to sell pigs don't sell the bigger ones they catch.  They just stick them, but want to sell a pig!   Go figure!

I agree with you. Why feed them a couple bags of $11 bags of corn or $15 bags of pig feed while waiting to sell them, or (i hope not) not feed them at all wiating for a buyer. It is understandable to wanna recoupe some fuel n dog food money, but if your pumping feed to them on top of recouping money, now you have to charge more just to still be in red.

I made a hunt with a feller off the forum n his brother and only caught 1, but needed more meat n his brother gave me 2 more n didnt ask for a penny and refused to accept money in return. His words were, that 2 less i have to feed so im saving money by given them to ya.

With possible shortage of pork products coming soon, why not hang on to them porkers till prices go up bc of demand, and now you got your own pigs to slaughter. If you dont have to the room to keep them, and dont want to feed them, then why not cut them loose to catch again or kill them n donate the meat( if donations are still legal) to a shelter or meat locker?

I agree with you to a point half breed.   Dang sure if you go to the trouble to clean them.   I also agree with just help someone out.  My point I did not communicate is the guys that stick all the big ones & leave them lay, when they are too lazy to put in the work to tie them and take them out of the woods to sell.   We all know the bigger they are the more their worth!   This is a good way to get some money back!   In other words don't be lazy, or afraid to help someone!    Maby they are scared of the bigger ones!    Lol

Well lets see... If you have no four wheeler/ATV or just access in general to where the hog is caught? Man, sometimes there is just no other option, that is unless you want to call the hunt and spend a few hours dragging that beast through briar thickets, up and down creek banks, etc. I mean don't get me wrong, i LIKE to catch and tie but sometimes it's just not feasible. As far as selling them goes I'm with halfbreed. Nothing wrong with making a little money. Heck, you can pick up shiatsu all day long for 10 to 25 depending on size. That ain't bad.

X2...

Plus most of the dogs I am used to hunting with are pretty gritty and no one wants a tore up hog... Sometimes it is feasible and sometimes it's just not. Also, its pretty hard to keep a decent sized pig in good health in the heat of the summer, atleast from what i have seen from hunting south Texas anyways; could be different elsewhere though.

I have hunted a very long time with no 4-wheeler ect and i or we carried or dragged every single hog i was ever in on catching out.. Dead or Alive no matter how far out we were.. several Miles sometimes.. If not we turned it loose.. Even when i hunted alone. I live catch mostly so when i  get rested a while i go again or whatever the group wants to do. if i killed it i called it the night or packed the body with ice and tried to get another after i took it back to the truck..  I don't understand people that hunt and kill a animal and do not eat it or find someone that will. If you don't plan on eating it and you have no pen to keep it in and it is farther than you want to walk,  turn it loose for another day or DON"T GO to begin with! The only excuse to me for killing a hog and leaving it is if you are a rancher or farmer ect and protecting your property and animals/Crops( Not Hunting), or if the hog is sick looking and you know their is something wrong with it, or your hurt or have a dieing dog.. Myself and My dogs are more important than any hog..  If you load up dogs and drop them on the ground you are planning on hunting and if so and you get a hog, Do the right thing or stay at home if your not willing to do the work. Hog hunting is not for sissies and getting them out is part of the job as well as being a responcible hunter. 4-wheelers and buggies are nice but not everyone can afford them or hunt in areas you can use them, they are not a must have item to hog hunt. JMO.

One thing to remember. If you plan on donating the meat you have to bring it out alive. State law won't let you donate it unless it has been slaughtered in the presents of an inspector.

If you have your own lease, you are correct, turn them loose for another day. We turned all our sows and small boars out when i first started hunting. The place was a private lease and there were no crops within 25 miles. That being said, if you dont own or lease the land I would bet money that here in Texas and probably in Florida too, if the land owner finds out your turning them out after catching them you won't be hunting that place much longer.

You are right, Land owners would be pissed for releasing hogs when you are their to take them out. That being said I don't have to worry because i take everything out dead or alive. I don't go if i am not prepared and have the help ect and the people i hunt with understand and don't care if we only catch one and have to leave and come back another day to not ruin or waste meat... The man who got me started hunting 17 years ago taught me everything i know and i have passed that on to my son and people i hunt with. I gave the only exceptable reasons for not taking one out and none were it was too much work or it would shorten the hunt.  I have never been on a lease for the record. i was just responding to you talking like it was too much work and shortend your hunts sometimes without a 4-wheeler.  its all good.

No worries, the way you stated your opinion was just a little abrasive. Brings to mind "a mile in another mans shoes". It's all good though.

I guess this part to me is just normal hog hunting and to be expected, everyone i have ever hunted with and known of hunting hunts that way also and it hit me the wrong way. I have a bad habit of saying what i feel.  Don't mean to be rude or abrasive, just honest but i guess it must be coming off that way. I will fix it.

I have only killed and left one hog because I was to far in thickets and had a few dogs with live threating injuries and had to get them out right then this is the only reason that would even be consider a reason to me

if i can get 20 dollars a shoat, im gonna stop huntin for the big ones and catch all little ones because a hog that weighs 150 pounds is going for around 30 to 40 dollars u might get lucky and catch two like that in a night but i cant count the times ive trapped 8 to 10 shoats in a trap so if you do the math on say 8 shoats i think thats a 160 dollars compared to 50 dollars so i agree with half breed if you can sell it and move out of the red git r done, somebody always needs a shoat to train a pup

I like too see pigs for sale on here especially if they have been caught in a trap...comes in handy when I need to train pups...matter of fact I need to buy a couple of 50-80 pounders right now because my pups are ready...

I never take pigs alive...but I did in my younger days when I needed one for training...and now If someone wants to take them alive I help tie and load them to haul but that is it...

Thanks for everyone's input, defiantly a different way to look at it.  I hardly ever catch any smaller ones that aren't chewed up.  I had no idea that many people actually would buy a pig.  I just give them away if they aren't big enough to take to a buyer.  If I need a pig for pups I have always been able to get someone to give me a pig when needed.  I need a pig now so I called my buddy and asked him if he had any,  he said he had 5 that he was given from another guy last week, and how many did I want?  Just come get them!    that is the reason I will give them away also!   I don't have much so a little bit won't matter much.  I just always want to help out when possible, guess its just the way things are in the small community I am from.  I'm not saying what is wrong or rite just an opinion!

I wish I could find a few shoats, I cant even buy them right now.  I go hunting to get a few and I been catching big hogs that way to big for my pups.

I hate to complain about catching big hogs, so I won't, but it'd be nice to get a small boar or two.  Itd be easy if I was in Texas, but they're ain't to many Louisiana members close to me.

the farmers we hunt for would send us packing if we didnt kill every one we caught and we would need a trailer full of hogs to get the diesel money back for hauling them to the closest buyer (bout 70 miles one way). oh and i was raised to eat what you kill but i still havent eatin a rat and killed plenty along with opossum ,armadillo ,coyote, skunks ect.ect.
