Title: Needing some advise... Post by: Pitman01 on October 02, 2012, 04:14:40 pm I'm fairly new to the sport and was thinking about getting a bay/ strike dog. I already have a catch dog but was wondering what breed o should go with and I know this is probably goin to start a debate but I'm really curious on what breeds to look at. I like the ybmc and I also like catahoulas but have also looked at the jagds and patterdales bit they can get kinda pricey and like I said I'm fairly new and don't really know what to look for so any advise is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for yalls time, Jeremy Title: Re: Needing some advise... Post by: hoghunter71409 on October 02, 2012, 04:32:11 pm The only way to know is get out in the woods with different people and see what you like. Every breed has good and bag so dont judge a breed on one dog. Everyone on here has different opinions. Although opinions can be good, I would choose a breed based on what I saw and learned in the woods.

Post by: M Bennet on October 02, 2012, 04:40:57 pm it would also help you to figure out wat style of hunting you want to do. walk, road them , rig hunting , hood hunting , casting them . then go hunting with some one that hunt s the style you like, and see wat kinda dogs or breed they use . so many ways to catch these hogs. do you want loose bay, rough catchy , ones that bay tight , then theres short range , medium , long range . find some one were you hunt that can help point u in the right direction.

I don't care about the breed as long as it will hunt. Title: Re: Needing some advise... Post by: Pitman01 on October 02, 2012, 04:47:01 pm I've been on one hunt with you monty but that was last winter early spring with Ronnie and dale and Blake and Corey and normally I hunt with Corey and Blake so I'm mainly goin to either be roading or walking. I really don't care the breed.

Post by: H.Wilson on October 02, 2012, 05:05:05 pm Every one above is correct what ever fits your style is what you will end up with now me personally I enjoy walking into a big boat being bated solid by a couple yeller dogs which is what I run ybmc but I have seen some outstanding dogs out of other breeds no doubt
Title: Re: Needing some advise... Post by: JoshStokley on October 02, 2012, 07:25:20 pm Just like everyone else said hunt with different people with different styles and see what you like. I'm still trying to figure that one out myself but I've been lucky enough to meet some real stand up people on here who have helped me and taught me a ton about this sport and dogs in general. Heck even a little life lesson here and there. I will say though that I have noticed it's not the breed of dog that you look for. It's a specific line of dogs that works the way you want or even a type of dog that is geared a certain way. My best dog is a mutt and was free because someone was nice enough to help me get started and she is a good dog that will get the job done.
Title: Re: Needing some advise... Post by: NLAhoghounds on October 02, 2012, 08:07:58 pm every dog i own is a mix breed. catahoulaXmtcur, walkerXcatahoula and i like em like that. some of the best dogs ive seen where just hines 57 mutts that just so happen to like finding hogs. im fairly new to the sport as well and i learned real quick u cant base your judgement on a certain breed of dog just because the r yella r have class eyes or you like to hear a bawl mouth in the woods. its the DOG that matters more than it is the breed

Title: Re: Needing some advise... Post by: Blake F on October 18, 2012, 04:19:49 pm HaHa.....Winding off the box is the same as hood hunting. It's still winding from the truck and jumping off. Some dogs come over the cab and "hood" or others just go off the tailgate. On a truck as tall as mine, its easier for them to go off tailgate.
Title: Re: Needing some advise... Post by: dan on October 18, 2012, 09:08:21 pm Pitman,
Use dogs that are most similar to your friends dog. One new dog or puppy at a time. Title: Re: Needing some advise... Post by: waggandtag on October 22, 2012, 08:34:10 pm It is higher to buy a good trained dog but if I was you that's the way I would go then u can use it to train puppies
