Title: Pain!
Post by: Swine-Stalker on October 10, 2012, 01:16:05 pm
I have dealt with pain before... nothing to major. Broke 3 bones in my leg (football), broken a couple fingers, concussion(football), 20 stitches in my knee from sliding down a ditch that had glass on the bank, 8 stitches in my eyebrow from the scope of a .270, compression fracture to my spine (football) and road rash on 1/2 of one leg from laying a dirtbike down on asphalt... But nothing compared to lastnight. Flash burn sucks! I learned the hard way and was up all night and it felt like someone poured gas and sand in my eyes. Didnt ease them to close them, open them, eye drops, rub them... no comfort, no sleep and I was pert near blind all night. When I did manage to open my eyes for about 5 seconds everything was very foggy. Now I am sitting at the computer with shades on. It is bearable but still very uncomfortable. Any one else dealt with flash burn and know remedies? I heard that potatoes cut in half on the eye lids and certain eye drops work. Anyways, I am on the downside of this and dont plan on it happening again.

Had it happen about 15 years ago.. Never happened again. Lol. It is an awful feeling. When it happened I made the wife take me to the er at 2am because I didn't realize what had happened. Dr. put some drops in my eyes and it was instant relief but by the time I got home the drops had wore off and it was back to the pain and discomfort. Finally got to sleep and by the time I finally woke everything was back to somewhat normal.

years ago there was a pharmacist in Westwego, La. that made some drops that would instantly kill the pain of a flash. It would deaden the nerves of the eyes. All welders had a bottle at home. This $hit was worth it's weight in gold. They made him take it off the market.

The best thing to do is when you feel one coming on, knock back a six pack or two and get to sleep as fast as you can. Don't stay up trying to fight it. A flash is hundreds of little blisters on the eye and they start popping and that is what feels like sand in your eyes. It will
last until all blisters finish popping. I had them so bad that my eyes were literally stuck closed.

If I remember correctly you are young and still in high school so I am sure that you have been told " if you keep doing that you are going to go blind ". Well, they did'nt listen !! They have been out of school for years and are still doooooing it !! They were one of the few lucky one's and for some reason ( probably not from their own good sense ) stopped right before they went completely stone cold blind ! Do your self a favor Cheston and stop doing it right now before it's to late !!! Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder were'nt born blind, they made theirselves that way because they did'nt listen !  ;) ;D

Most folks get it from welding or being near someone welding,....it just sunburns your eyes. I've had it twice,.....one of those times was like yours.....misery like no other. I went to the eye quack the next morning after a night of zero sleep....he put Pontocaine in my eyes....about 2 drops each and the misery went to bliss......instantly! But it does wear off eventually and you have to add it again. I don't know if they use that anymore, but they do have deadening drops. The danger in these is getting something in your eye and not being able to tell that it's there.....you could do some major damage if that happens, because with this stuff in your eyes, you could take a dry stick and poke around in there and you couldn't feel a thing. Good luck......it does get better. :D

I had the pontocaine once before and they worked wonders. During summer break between school years about 12 years ago I was working with brick layers. Rounded a corner and a block wire scraped my eye lid and part of my eyeball and within an hour or two some of the eye jelly started coming out. Pontocaine and an eye patch and all was good in a couple days. But noting ever felt as bad as last night. I just wanted to claw them out. So bad I woke my wife up at 1:30am  :o

iv burned my eyes 5 times from either welding or helping the welder. the first time it took 4 days before i could see good, and a couple days the next 2x and then the last time, it was nearly a wk before i could see clear, along with having galvanization poisoning from welding gal. steel. i was told to take a brown tater, cut it up and make a politce out of it and place it over my eye. when the tater juices ran into my eyes, the pain went away and i could sleep.

SC I am sure that hurt... Maybe my pain tolerance has gone down, but I don't think you understand. This was a 7 on a 10 scale. I have passed 3 kidney stones in the last 2 years and I put those at a 4 out of 10. Maybe I am a big baby about it... Charles please describe the pain before you knew the remedies.

Swiney stalker you wouldn't have had to worry about flash burn if we had honest neighbors around here. :) the unfortunate truth is that iron is probably in the scrap yard by now.

I came in from welding n bout 30min later my eye felt like somebody threw a hand full of salt n alcohol in my eyes. I told my dad how my eyes felt n he told me to make a tater poltice. Iv been told to take a a bloody steak covered in meat tenderizer n lay the steak on the eyes n let the blood n tenderizer seep into the eyes n let it set for a couple hrs n then put the poltice on the eyes. I tried the nxt time n i think it actually helped, or i just didnt burn them as bad.

Jake ain't that the truth!

All is better and has been since this morning. I fell asleep around 3:30am only to be awaken by my alarm at 4:15... Hit snooze after I opened my eyes and everything was foggy and still a moderate burn... Alarm went off again at 4:30 and I didnt wake up to it till 7:30 and went to work. Everything is still foggy but manageable.

It happened to me when i was about 18,building a round pen with dad. We worked on it all day then i went out to my sisters 21st birthday party untill about midnight. Went to sleep and then all hell broke loose!! I ended up at the e.r. and they put some drops in there and eased the pain considerably. But i know exactly what you mean about no relief! cant open them cant close them cant rub them. I dont ever want to go through that again!!

Well the re-building of the Cajun microwave lid is done... However I did weld a lil on the box and rack for the samurai so I will see how I do tonight. I tried to keep my hood on more, my wife kept a close eye on my PPE usage. Said she ain't getting up in the middle of the night again.
