Title: Welding Aluminum? Post by: dub on November 22, 2012, 10:44:04 pm With Helium expensive and hard to get I started looking around. What are my options to make a dog box out of aluminum? I have seen those rods used to patch holes. They only use a propane torch. I doubt they could weld though. I was told argon does not work on thicker metals but what gauge aluminum is used on dog boxes? I would prefer aluminum for the weight. But if I can't weld it I may go with steel.

Post by: payden meisner on November 22, 2012, 10:50:15 pm i have welded aluminum on those salt water haul trucks i was useing a wire welder with argon those trailers are pretty thick it did the job just fine the wire is fairly cheap. it will work fine for a dog box not sure about the argon the company paid for that make sure the wire is rated for aluminum

Title: Re: Welding Aluminum? Post by: mod93dirt on November 23, 2012, 12:47:19 am How thick you looking to weld? Any alum welding I have ever done was with straight argon and a spool gun. I've welded up to probably 1/4 in material. Never had any problem at all, and I can't imagine needing any thicker material for a dog box.

Title: Re: Re: Welding Aluminum? Post by: Hogsnatchers on November 23, 2012, 07:23:22 am Just use 100% argon. Spool gun with the right wire for the job their are different grades of wire. If your thinking about heliarc welding it you have to have a high frequency box and you can't use the standard tungsten tips you use on carbon they aren't hard enough you have to get 100% tungsten tips as well
