Title: Gravel or concrete Post by: Swine-Stalker on December 05, 2012, 08:33:05 am Building kennels soon and was wondering what would be best. I used the search but still had a few questions. What tends to smell more gravel or crete? I would rather use gravel to keep from running 500ft of waterline to clean the crete. If I spray the rocks every other weekend with a bleach water solution would it keep the smell down? Is it worth putting lime and sand in first then gravel? What size gravel keeps digging down? Lastly i would like to cover it with a heavy duty tarp/mat like one i saw pictured in a previous post... where would i get that? Kennels will be 5x10 runs with 4-5 runs so 10x20 total size, made of wood post and utility panel so I can easily add more when needed. Thanks in advance.
Title: Re: Gravel or concrete Post by: jakes on December 05, 2012, 08:52:03 am I think we had this conversation before. Gravel is going to be a constant hassle. Concrete is going to be more expensive but worth the money. IMO gravel wouldn't be an option. Rent a trencher and run a water line. It's going to be cheaper in the long run.

Title: Re: Gravel or concrete Post by: jimco on December 05, 2012, 11:21:12 am Everyone has to do what ever their budget will allow. How ever, if you can afford it I would recommend a concrete slab. Put you a good slope to it and use a good bull float and get it as slick as you can finish it. You will be able to wash the slab down real quick and easy.
Title: Re: Gravel or concrete Post by: jimco on December 05, 2012, 11:50:45 am Check out the kennels by Tarter Farm and Ranch. Heavy duty kennels that will last. Mine are 3 yrs. old , no rust. They have some type of coating and paint that is really corrosion resistant. They come in 10 x 10 or 6 x 10. You buy the first complete kennel (4 pieces) and then
you just add the necessary panels (3 pieces) to add additional kennels. I attached 4x4's across the top and put corrugated tin for a roof. You live in Denham Springs right. A friend of mine in Denham Springs uses them. That's where I first seen them and decided to get me some. By the time you buy all the materials and cattle panels, and hardware for gates etc. I think these would be a good alternative. Like I said we all got to build what our budget will allow. It's just one of many options you have. http://www.tarterfarmandranch.com/switch.php?fn=catalog.details&cod=DKFHDG&site=gsa&emp=gsa (http://) (http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/eelcat1/Picture004.jpg) Title: Re: Gravel or concrete Post by: Koa96727 on December 05, 2012, 04:13:47 pm I have concrete. kennels sloped 4inchs to the back with a drain hole on 1 end. olny thing I would change is add more drain holes. cleaning is still quick and I use pinesol and belch every few days I can take some pic if you'd like

Title: Re: Gravel or concrete Post by: charles on December 05, 2012, 08:32:11 pm As to the digging problem, i too hav a dog that must b part diller. I put limestone road base n set my kennels on it n she still DIGS. I cant catch her at it, i dont want to run an e-fence at the bottom n have rubbed her face n nose in the loose soil after filling in the hole, used her feet to dig it up and have put foot to a$$ n she still digs. Any suggestions to stop the digging? Oh n iv sprinkled zatarans crab boil, cheyanne pepper n tony's creole seasoning n it doesnt phase her. Dub recomended putting a wire mat down but before buying any kind of wire to lay under dirt n rust out, and of course i dont have the $ for a slab rite now. Any ideas?
Title: Re: Gravel or concrete Post by: Swine-Stalker on December 06, 2012, 10:18:47 am Looks like I am going with Crete. Got a deal on some. And I would rather go with Crete than put rocks and regret it. I am building out of wood and panels... Just have to wrap the posts in my pits pin with tin to keep him from chewing his way out.
Charles you can take some of the credit for making my mind up. I have a BMC that is digging a burrow right now hahahaha. Title: Re: Gravel or concrete Post by: jimco on December 08, 2012, 01:09:51 am Sorry to stray a bit off topic on your thread, but Jimco, how are the mosquitos during summer being that close to the pond. Are they eating the dogs up or do they stay away from that pond The mosquitoes are terrible at dusk for miles around we are surrounded by swamps and bayous. They are no worst around the pond than anywhere else. I give ivomec for heartworms faithfully on the first of the month. The mosquitoes seem to die down after dark. The dogs look great, I never see any bites on them or see them scratching. Title: Re: Gravel or concrete Post by: ROCKIN ROO HOG DOGS on December 08, 2012, 05:55:59 am Good deal, man im so stupid,i forgot you were from the swamp state!! I cant stand skeeters,Only once did i ever have to actually spray the dogs down with spray during a hunt along the deepfork river, wont hunt there in the summer ever again, those skeeters were as big as crows!!!!
Title: Re: Gravel or concrete Post by: Swine-Stalker on December 08, 2012, 06:55:40 am This past summer I sprayed my dogs every other day and would still get some skeeters on the second day. And i hear you about "skeeters the size of crows" here in the bayou state we got ones that could stand flat footed and fvck a turkey. When you swat them you gotta blood trail them to finish them off ;D
Title: Re: Gravel or concrete Post by: camodogs on December 09, 2012, 07:55:18 pm We did Crete. Mixed with pea gravel. Notice the dogs Having sores so we put down straw.
