Title: Auxiliary diesel tank
Post by: Lacy man on December 07, 2012, 07:57:47 am
Do any of you guys have any experience with these? Looking to get one. What do y'all like? Carbon steel? Aluminum? If carbon steel do any of y'all have it rhino lined? Any comments will be appreciated. I'm looking to get one built with a tool box on top as well

Thanks

I use an aluminum toolbox combo with a fillrite pump.  It has cracked at the 2" fitting where the pump is mounted, i believe due to vibration. Now I have to weld it up.  Not sure if I would go back with another aluminum one myself.

I don't like steal talks bc if you don't use it alot it can start rusting out from the in side and put rust in your fuel. I like stainless steel or aluminum I just have had better luck with them

The one a guy was going to build me would be a 50 gallon tank used every day and he puts a stainless screen in the tank along with an additional fuel filter before it goes into the tank. I would think this would save from an rust gettin in it. Whats your thoughts? This is exactly why I started tis thread I wanted to see the pros and cons

I do not any experience with the stainless steel screen. I don't no how it would hold up or stay attached for long-term. I like to also have a 1/4" drain on a tank to help keep the water out. This is only needed if you are only using a pump it get the fuel out of the tank

If you get the stainless screen, make dang sure it doesnt make contack with the aluminum.  If it does, electrolosis(sp) will corrode the aluminum and make a nasty mess.  Most people think aluminum wont rust, but if it is on contact with stainless or regular steel, it will dang sure corrode.

Any time 2 dissimilar metals make contact with out a barrier betwenn them, the weakesty of the metals will corrode. If u take a 2 part epoxy primer and coat both metals, it will greatly reduce the chance of corrosion. In aviation, it is required by faa standards and maintenance practices to coat ALL metals being installed on the acft with an epoxy primer. Using an all steel tank, a fuel resistant primer can be used, as long as the metal has been preped before application of primer. Alodine or muratic acid will work as a preping material. Once the tank is primered, use a fuel resistant paint n apply several coats n that will great reduce any corrosion of steel tanks

Line the tank with this por15 before you use the tank. http://www.por15.com/US-STANDARD-TANK-SEALER/productinfo/TSG/
