Title: Question on javenlins
Post by: Canyonranch on December 09, 2012, 01:47:02 pm
Might be going to a ranch in big wells tx it has a ton of hogs but it also has javenlins there 2. How do dogs react to them? Will they bay them up or will they pass on them? Never hunted around them so I don't know.

I guided quail hunts on the King Ranch and they had both. The wild hogs there acted just about like any other hog you run across. I had one boar run all my bird dogs back to the truck.

The javelinas are a little different especially if they have pigs. We ran across some in thickets and if they had pigs the whole bunch would come out after the dogs. They bite like a dog and a big one will weigh about 50 pounds. Also they like to get into culverts.

If your dogs are do not know about them they are in for a rude awakening. Most friends that bring their dogs from up north cannot distinguish between the two and will usually try to catch one because they think it's a small hog.  Better pack four staple guns!

If your dogs are trash broke they shouldn't mess with them.

Stuff happens but in Texas you can not catch with dogs or kill one with a knife.

the females taste better than pork or deer...males taste worse than a big rank boar hog...

I have heard of some South Texas dog men that like to hunt them with dogs...I know they do in Mexico...In the past I sent a couple of mt. curs that way for javalina hunting...

Well from far away it is dern near impossible... They dont have a big ol set of coconuts hanging out their back end like hogs... but one way to sex em is the size of their scent gland on their back!!! And don't cut that thing if you every do wanna eat one, I have cleaned ONE and wont ever do it again!!!

I wouldn't swear by it but I think they have a self defense musk gland eight above there tail. But if you can cut out that gland within 15 min of being killed then you got some good eating.. my family used to run them with hounds

Well like Mr. Wine has pointed out I have the unfortunate ability to catch the hell out of them. My dogs are something like pros right about now when handling them. They are very agile and aggressive when its time to get down. Once the dogs get on them everyone we have come across head for a culvert or den of some kind and if they get dogs in there they will do work all night on them.  And there is no catch and release with these suckers cause once no dogs are helping you stretch'em they can bite anywhere on their body and fast.
