Title: Florida-Texas hunt
Post by: crackerc on December 09, 2012, 06:17:43 pm
I had invited Cward out for a hunt and he came and stayed at the house with his three kids. Now for those of you that don't know them, they are good people. And those kids are as tough as any kids anywhere, I will guarantee that! Cattle (his real name) is 6 years old and he hunted 3 days with us, from daylight to dark, walking miles through palmettos, cypress swamps, oak scrub, etc.....and he was BAREFOOT the whole time!! Never once complained either. How many kids (or adults) could do that??

I had invited Noah too as he wanted to meet Chance. And Dave came along as did Cajunl and a friend of his that goes by Bird on here I think. Plus there was Cutter Bay , Spazhogdog, and many more. We had all split up and hunted in different groups. We all caught hogs, but only ONE of us got in trouble for allowing his wide ranging yellow dogs to trespass on an adjoining property....bet you can't guess who that was!

Lots of pics taken but these are the only ones I have. Hopefully someone else will post some more from the hunt. We all met up at lunch, every day for three days, and cooked under a big old live oak tree. We sat and ate and told tales about the morning hunt. It just doesn't get much better than that!

Pic one is of a Barr hog that we caught "accidently". I had hunted Monkey and a young dog the first morning where I thought there would be hogs. Never had a bark so we loaded and moved. Chance hunted his dogs next and we got in some hogs. I think they caught 4 hogs before we got all the dogs back.  I have a torn tendon in my foot and it was bothering me so I didn't make that round on foot. I did take the truck and pic up everybody! After lunch we moved and I went and parked on a road where I could see a long ways and was just going to sit there and watch the road to see what I could see until dark. Chance and Noah were going to hunt by the river. Dave and I were sitting side by side in our trucks just shooting the breeze. I had let my young CD out to run around and do her business, but had loaded her back up. So I let Monkey and my Sister female out to do the same, since they had been in the box a couple hours. I was just sitting there talking to Dave when Monkey starting baying about 50-60 yards off the road in chest high palmettos. Now we had been sitting there talking for a hour, CD had been running around, other trucks had driven by, etc and that hog laid right there the whole time! Sister got to Monkey pretty quick and both dogs were baying. I had gone in to see what the hog was but couldn't see it was so thick, but the hog was running the dogs so I came back out to get my CD (who has never caught a hog in the woods...yet) and here comes a truck. It was Cutter Bay and some friends. I knew he had a CD so I told him to grab it, and I pulled mine out of the box. Monkey and Sister were steady baying so we eased in. We turned both CD's loose and the hog broke out the back side before they got there. Monkey was right on the hog and stopped him within 40-50 yards. the CD's were still loose and got there and caught hog!
Of course when the hog broke it about ran over one of Cutter Bay's friends (who happens to be his boss I believe). He had never bee hog hunting or even seen it so all that was quite an experience for them! We took the hog out, got some pics of the hog with Cutters friends and we let them have the hog as they had never gotten one before. It was a good time for everyone.

All the hunts kind of blend together as we were going non-stop and hunting with different people. So I may not get all the facts or order of events just right. That's my disclaimer..... :o

I hunted Monkey and Spur together the second day....I think?? Anyway, I rarely hunt them together anymore as they tend to get wrecked when hunted together. Several people on here can vouch for that. But I didn't get a bark the first morning and when you turn these two loose together, they usually produce hogs. For those of you that don't know, Spur is Monkey's son.

We picked a likely looking spot and turned the Monkey and Spur loose and headed towards the river. After going a ways and the dogs hunting out, then coming back and checking in, then leaving again, we heard a dog bay. I thought it was Spur so we headed that way. As we got closer, we found that Monkey had a hog caught and Spur had one bayed and they were about 150 yards apart. Now these two dogs are REAL independent so neither would go to the other as long as they had their own hog. Dave, Rowdy and I headed to Monkey. Dave got there first (and Rowdy got ragged on the the rest of the hunt how he let a 63 year old man beat him to a caught hog... ;D). As soon as he legged the hog, Monkey went to Spur. Noah, Chance and Cattle had gone to Spur also. Monkey got there and both dogs were baying. Noah turned his Dogo loose and caught the hog, a big sow. It would have made great video as the sow was fighting the dogs and they were baying and circling. But the Dogo got there!!
In the pic are Rowdy, Cattle, me, Dave, Noah and his Dogo. That's Monkey in the background.

We went on down to the river and let the dogs cool off ...while we watched for gators....headed back towards the truck a mile away . The dogs had left and not long after Spur bayed. Garmin showed they weren't together but Monkey came to him and they bayed together in palmettos. We got close and could hear the hog running dogs and it sounded like a big hog. Noah didn't have a vest on the Dogo due to it being hot, so I helped him put the vest on it. Chance had gotten closer trying to get some video but all you can see is palmettos. Turned the Dogo loose and he caught. They said the barr (another one) stood the Dogo straight up when he caught! Wished we could have gotten all that on video! Chance showed Noah how to tie one "Texas style". Then for an encore he was going to show Noah how to turn one loose "Texas style". Unfortunately the barr didn't read the script! ;D

There is a video ....that I am trying to get....of Noah...in a tree...videoing Chance untying the hog, holding him by the tail and getting a tree (a small one at that) between him and the hog. Chance turns the hog loose and the hog runs him a few laps around the tree..... :o Then stops looking at Chance. It's a stand off for a second, then the hog charges, Chance goes UP the tree and the hog jumps up the tree trying to get him, before running off. And its all on video......somewhere.... ;D

Pic of the barr with me and Chance. Our camera man was having trouble with his phone and cut the hogs head off. But he had 15 inches of teeth...I promise! O0

Third morning I turned out Monkey and two of his daughters. We headed into a block that is palmettos and gallberries with scattered flat ponds. Monkey was out about 250-280 yards and just stayed about that far out. Then he jumped and changed zip codes. We lost him at 1.2 miles on the Garmin. We had to go to the truck and drive closer to pick him back up on the Garmin. We found him and he was bayed along a creek in a wet slough.

My Sister female had gone towards Monkey before he jumped and we had left her in the woods. I had Runt with me and my young CD. CajunL and Bird were there and had a CD also. Runt went to Monkey and both bayed. I got there and the hog was backed up under the roots of a fallen oak tree in knee deep water. It looked like a good hog so we cut both CD's loose. It turned out to just be a mean old sow, but I don't trust my CD yet as this was only her second hog. She did good though so maybe there is hope.

Monkey did a good job on this hog. Especially for a 8 1/2 year old beat up hog dog..... ;D

After we loaded the hog and got all the dogs situated I was wondering where Sister was as I had a beep beep collar on her but no Garmin and my box was in my grey truck at the lunch site. All of a sudden she shows up coming to us, about 1 1/2 miles from where we lost her. Not sure if she trailed Monkey up or the truck, but glad she has enough sense to find me.

Another good hunt.

CajunL and Bird with the sow. I had to hunt out of my yellow truck as every now and then Cajunl would throw a blue spotted dog in there and I had to travel under cover........ :o

I am going to try and leave the permit with Andy at the gate Friday night. If that won't work I will leave it in my mailbox for you guys. Its only 1 1/2 miles from my gate to that gate so its not too far out of the way!

Will let you know how things go Friday. It rained a little (very little ) here today so maybe that will help.

Let me know if you want to hunt Sunday. Maybe you, me and Josh can hunt. Dave isn't going to hunt but on Friday and Lynel is out of town.

First off, Monkey showed his ass this wknd, I don't know what Mark is talkin' about when he says Monkey is crippled... I didn't see any evidence to support that  ;D  Ol' Monkey kicked ass this wknd!!!

I cannot deny, I had very much looked forward to see Chance's dogs work... What I saw is pretty much what I expected, he had some fine, HARD hunting dogs... specifically, their casting ability was very impressive.  Dogs bred for working ability on big property, good chit!!!!  ;) ;D

Havin' said THAT  ;D.... welcome to Florida homeslice  ;D....   The prop we was huntin' on was about 9K acres... an "interesting" proposition for some "certain" Texan dogs lol...

After Mark made his first set, Chance put his "Mater" gyp out and she rolled the hell out I'm here to tell you!!!,   The bitch bayed up #1, we walked Bucho in and caught... soon as the Buch hit, Mater wuz off to the next!!!   She set in and we made our way to her and caught out again... again she rolled out... this time however... OFF THE DAMN PROPERTY LOL!!!!!  ;D

... Wasn't too long and Chance got a call from the local SHERRIF, AND Game Warden LOL... they wanted to "meet" this man with these long range dogs HAHAHA  ;D  ... and they were not real "freindly" ta start off with!!!!  :o ;D

Thankyou Mark for inviting me on this hunt  ;D

Welcome to Florida brother Chance  ;D   It was enlightening for all of us I believe LOL!!!!  ;D    After Chance talked hisself out of a misdemeanor LOL.... we perty much decided to stay as FAR away from that area as possible lol... which was, of course, where the majority of the hogs were!!!

...  Neither me or Chance really got to see the entirety of what each others dogs are during this hunt.   We saw bits and pieces, but I am happy to say it is gonna take many more hunts to come to a final conclusion  ;) ;D

Thankyou Mark for inviting me on this hunt.  I feel like I finally got to meet a long lost freind in Chance.    I thought that we would hit it off, but I had no idea how well...  Was so nice to spend time with him and his kids.   Tristen, Rowdy, and Cattle I would adopt in a heartbeat LOL....   was a glimpse into what it would be like if I had more kids... a good thing.

Cattle, Chance and me  with hawg  ;D

You'll have plenty of places to stay, chain spots for dogs and lots of land to hunt if you decide to head west some time this year. My family and I don't have the prettiest house, but it's warm and open to friends. (that means your more than welcome to stay in the shed)  ;D lol

Come on with it, You can hunt beautiful east Texas piney woods, grain fields and i even know a fella with a super secret spot on a beach. Let the dogs cast the badlands and you can catch some redfish.

The three day Florida - Texas showdown hog dog hunt was great!  Good folks, good dogs, and just a good old time was had by all.

There were probably 30+- people all total in the group, but all went in separate directions and groups to hunt.  Everyone bayed and/or caught hogs, then converged at the shady oak tree picnic table for a cook out lunch each day and tell the stories of the days hunt and catches.

Mark's Monkey and Spur dogs started out slow the first morning, but turned on quick once we put'em in the right place.  That "Mater" gyp of Chance's is one hog finding machine!  All of Chance's dogs have alot of aggressive hunt and desire and appear to be very heat tolerant as they never slowed down while their feet were on the ground.

Noah's and Lynel's dogs put up some numbers also which was a challenge in the warm mid-day Fla temps and dry conditions.

I did hear some trail barking hear and there, but think those were bluish colored (not yellow) dogs.    :-)

Knowing Noah and having had him on some hunts for bad hogs and then seeing him up a tree was a hoot.  One big old boar spinning around with Noah on his back one cold morning a few years ago comes to mind.

Hunting together with good friends is alot of fun and will always be remembered.  Hopefully there will be a next time.

Dave

Boy y'all guys are to much. I would say we are alittle more than friends its family. Crackerc opened his house to me and my kids. He gave my kids gifts that they will cherish forever and always remember. People its all about the good Times memories. The Florida dogs all did very well. I really liked them all. Noah it was a pleasure to hunt with you the first time. I want to take the time to think easttexashogdoggers for making all this possible.
There is one thing that is missing and that is cutterbay he was removed from this board a while back because he came off the wrong way. But I will say this if anyone on this board and I mean anyone ever gets in a bind in Florida that guy will drop what he is doing and help them. I seen him stop his hunt to make sure Noah got his truck fixed. Cutter helped organize the lunches we had everyday. He helped every with skinning there hogs. We all meet through this site witch has made it possible but to me its not the same with out him. Lisa did a great job on the lunches. Dave beat rowdy to a hog that made my day cause if rowdy would have caught every hog I would have had to rent an 18 wheeler to get his head home.lol Yes my dog did do alittle trespassing but I guess that's why we have had 2 million hogs in Texas since1991 cause them trespassing dogs keep them from over populating. J/k Great hunts and great Times. Oh and you could hear them hound from one side of that place to the other.lol

Great to meet everyone. That is one of the best thing about the quota hunts is you can get together with old friends and meet some new ones.

I got to meet Noah and hunt with his dogs some. We never caught anything huge but laid our hands on some pork. And found a good buck doing in.

I did not get to hunt with Chance much. But I enjoyed visiting with him and all the kids. They are for sure Good People. I hope you get to come back to Florida or make a trip out to Tx to hunt some.

Also got to meet Terry and Lisa and enjoyed visiting and she put out an awesome spread for everyone. It was much appreciated.

Josh, Clint(bird) and I got to steal Rowdy away from the tx. crew for an afternoon hunt. The "Florida spotted crew" got to tie some. Rowdy deserves a big head cause that boy is damn sure handy in the woods. He can tie a hog better than 90% of the grown men I have hunted with!

Man, I missed out.

Things didn't end up working out like I hoped.
I was sick, truck in the shop, figured out last minute my trailer running lights didn't work, so couldn't bring my dog box, got a bubble in my tire on my way up. To top it off my dad smokes cigarettes in his house, and it was bothering me so bad I couldn't sleep at all.

I only hunted that first morning, caught a small sow, while I was dragging that one out my dog magic went to cajuns dogs and I didn't get there till they had the sow dragged out of the swamp. Clint told me I showed up at the right time, cause it was nasty in there, ha.

I had a bigger hog bust out on the road right next to magic, and he stopped him quick, but when I let the catch dog go he got slowed up in the palmettos. The hog broke and some loud blue long eared dogs came out of no where, and my catch dog went to chasing them around. Never got the hog stopped again.

I planned on meeting you all, but it just wasn't a good week for me.

Was a great hunt guys I think everyone caught hogs (as hard as that is to believe as there were spotted dogs there..... ;D) and everyone had a good time. I think Noah made a couple new friends...Cattle was either hanging off Noah or beating on him every time he got close!! At one time Noah was bent down getting something out of his back pack and Cattle was steadily punching him in the back the whole time......good thing Noah has kids...and patience!! LOL

Maybe we can plan another get together next year and make this a regular event!
