Title: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: wine6978 on December 10, 2012, 03:58:29 pm To the guys who strictly bay and shoot... not folks who carry a pistol just in case something happens... What caliber do you shoot. I am about to start a lot of hunting by myself for work, and think baying em up and sittin em down would be a hell of a lot easier than dealing with a catch dog(not to say my cd wont get used when I am hunting for fun!!!). But I am looking at either a 44 mag in a lever gun or a .357 in a lever gun... Which one and why?? Or any other cailbers that are easily accessible??? (My work will pay for my ammo if it is easy to get)

Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: mduggan on December 10, 2012, 04:29:54 pm I would lean toward the .357 mag.

Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: Koa96727 on December 10, 2012, 04:44:52 pm Depens where u hunt. when we hunt open places where some times it's hard 2 get close. I like 3030 or 357mag but when hunting in thick places I like 2 use. 22hornet or my 22mag. Depens how I'm feeling
Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: Purebreedcolt on December 10, 2012, 04:54:37 pm 44 or 45 also something to look at would be a 35 remington loaded with 357 bullets. I have a 35 in a marlin carbine and am really liking it so far have only shot a doe and a pig with it but man it is a beast with little kick.
Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: Curcross1987 on December 10, 2012, 05:08:20 pm Are you still useing bay dogs if so I would use a 22 mag don't have to worry about blowing threw

Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: alphabravo on December 10, 2012, 05:19:55 pm I would lean toward the .357 mag. http://www.henryrepeating.com/rifle-mares-leg.cfm http://www.rossiusa.com/product-list.cfm?category=17 Both of these would work Chambered in many of the old school cowboy rounds I'll be getting a ranch hand in the next year or so. Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: dan on December 10, 2012, 05:44:32 pm Youth model .223 single shot, with sling and no scope. High velocity round drops 'em like a fly. Cheap and easy to find ammo. Very light weapon to carry around.
I used my sons a couple times. In fact that's the only gun I have ever carried hog hunting, and that maybe 3 times while working for a soy bean farm. Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: 7Mhunter on December 10, 2012, 06:03:26 pm Im using a young catch dog right now so we take a gun just in case we take a bolt action 22 mag
Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: crackerc on December 10, 2012, 06:22:11 pm After getting dogs wrecked a couple times in the past few years by NOT having a gun or only having a .22 I invested in something with a little more ummpphhh. I don't shoot hogs that often but when I do have to shoot one I want him to go down..NOW!
Most of the rifle calibers will work but in thick woods they are a pain to carry around. Handguns are good but I have never been that good a shot with a pistol. So I bought something in-between. Its a Rossi RanchHand in .44 caliber. I picked the .44 as I have shot several hogs with a .357 and had them run. That usually doesn't happen with a .44. I even had a buddy make a custom shoulder holster for it. You carry the gun angled across your chest, barrel down. Its out of the way walking and ducking under brush. The gun is too long to hang on your side and not get caught in vines, palmettos and such so I am trying it this way. I have yet to shoot a hog with it, we have been catching them, but I have shot it at a target and it DOES kick! I use 125 gr winchester factory ammo and I've never had a projectile exit. They kill runners or "squirters" that come back past you on the quad great too. For big boars aim for the head or armpit and its all over. Almost no kick and not too loud. 30/30's will exit sometimes.

If hog runs at you and you hit them with a 44 you are either going to knock them down or change their direction. Have never had one go through like you will with a 30-30. 357's are just too loud. Only problem I have had with a 44 is shooting hollowpoints ( which is all I use) shooting through brush and hit a twig the bullet will split and fragment into little pieces and could hit a dog. Has happened twice to me, both times with big boars in thick brush where the hogs were baying loose, my fault i should have waited for a better shot. And go with a marlin lever action and you won't be disappointed!

I never shot mine around dogs but I did love the knock down power it had
Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: SCHitemHard on December 10, 2012, 07:05:17 pm 357 mag pistol for me
Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: dan on December 10, 2012, 07:08:22 pm That Rossi Ranch Hand looks neat! Our local gun store has a pile of them for sale right now. I looked at one and wondered about recoil. I don't need one but they are interesting. Reminds me of a John Wayne movie.
Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: Miller Lite on December 10, 2012, 08:35:31 pm You can't get a 30/30 in a low enough grain that it won't exit? I never shot mine around dogs but I did love the knock down power it had depends on how big it is an if you shoot over them enough you know what to look for when you squeeze the trigger i wait till the hog jumps at my dogs cause i know they're gettin the hell outta there so i take the shoot then Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: makenbeans on December 10, 2012, 08:35:54 pm 30-30 winchester
Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: chestonmcdowell on December 10, 2012, 08:50:51 pm ive killed hogs with a 22 but they were all head shots. but one time i shot a hog a 150 yards quartering away that was at a trot with a 243 he only ran 15 yards. i guess thats not to bad. but i THINK they make some 22 shells that have more lead than regular 22 lr. that might work. and i dont think they are real loud neither. nice gun crackerc!!
Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: crj4926 on December 10, 2012, 10:59:21 pm 30 carbine with a red dot scope in my opinion is a really good gun. We have been using them for as long as I can remember they have lots of knock down and the fun is as tough as they come as for as having a fun that can take abuse
Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: shinerslayers on December 11, 2012, 06:56:49 am 7.62x.39 found in many AK's and ranch rifles. (Ruger Mini 30). Very inexpensive ammo yet very reliable and plenty of knockdown and we always shoot Silver Bear soft or hollow points at bays to avoid blowing thru
Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: sanantoniodogger on December 11, 2012, 08:49:27 am really its ur choice but a 30-30 will travel thru some times. i carry a 44. lever or a 45. carbine neither of them have yet to pass thru with the load im using

Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: firemedic on December 11, 2012, 11:49:42 am In my opinion, as was stated above, the M1 carbine is as perfect a gun as there is for shooting hogs over dogs. Been using one for about 15 years and it can't be beat. Uses a 110 gr. bullet and will not shoot through a hog if it is over about 70 lbs. I use a 5 round clip and open sights, it's tough and with a synthetic stock weighs very little. Ammo is not real expensive either. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/12/12/sy6e6e7u.jpg)

Title: Re: Bay and Shoot gun Post by: BarrNinja on December 11, 2012, 08:47:15 pm Put me in the magnum club. Its hard to be those slow moving, pile driving magnum pistol rounds out of a repeating carbine rifle. 357 and 44 mag are my favorite.
