Buy some Fish Flex.  It's fish antibiotics that you can give dogs.  Basically cephalexin and works much better than penicillin.

U can normally order fish flex, fish mox (amoxicillin) through revival or lambert
vet supply.

I'll agree with cephalaxin being better n penicillin if both are given by mout, but it's hard to beat a course of injected penicillin in muscle

I use pen as a preventive but if they have an infection I use baytril it works good.

I always stick dogs with pen after a rough hunt 3 days in a row ...works great

Baytril for cattle. 1cc under the skin for 5 days.  Same stuff as the pills the vet will give you for a dog, but about a tenth the price.  Still a little more costly than pen but dang sure will kick the infection.

The only thing with Baytril is u have to be careful if u give it to pups. It has been known to cause joint problems when used in pups.

Buy a MERCK veterinary manual. It'll give you the correct dosages for each oral antibiotic and which organisms each antibiotic covers.

Revivalanimal.com has merck manual.  There are  a bunch of posts about mastitis on the board. Use the "search" tool and type in "mastitis"

Halfbreed is right on! The manual is on line and if you allways have internet,,you are good. I just like to have a book in my hands. Halfbreed, i was working at a vet's office in 72, probably my first exposure to the  merck manual too

LA 200 works good but no more than 2 cc's injected intromusculer or oral

There was a recent post that said the la200 was pretty much to hot for dogs not sure what the final word on it was but a few said their vets advised against it due to how hot it is have no first hand just figured id throw it out there always good to investigate when something like that comes up better safe than sorry.

This is what I personally do if its a bad cut, shot of pen in the leg on day one 2ml for big dogs 1ml for smaller dogs and 1 FishFlex pill per day for small dogs and 2 per day for pig dogs and I spray the cuts bites areas with blue spray. Has worked good for me.
