Title: Y'all watch the heat...RIP Bobo
Post by: Mike on June 14, 2009, 09:11:39 pm
I lost a good young dog yesterday to heat stroke. We struck a group off a protein feeder and the dogs went 1,000 yards before they shut down a big sow. Bobo was staggering around after we got her tied. Got him cooled down in the water and pumped him full of electrolytes... just like i've always done to others in the same situation. Lost him a few hours later.

I really hate that you lost him Mike, I really enjoyed hunting behind him and just being around him, he was a good dog.  Just goes to show how the heat can take any of em at any time, he was in shape in healthy but the heat effects all of us.

Hate to hear about you losing your dog. The heat is brutal this year it seems. It was 96 here today and about 100% humidity. Not exactly good hunting conditions.......so you guys be careful with those dogs and watch out for the snakes & gators!
I have definately cut down on summer hunting after getting Monkey overheated last summer and about losing him.

Really hate to hear that. Something like that happened to our catch dog (ammo) about a week ago. He didn't die but it was touch and go all night. Got so hot he just went limp on us, like a dish rag. Took him to a drain ditch that had a little water in it. When we got him home he couldn't keep his head from shaking and his pupils were diatated. Took hem a few days to get over it. Now we take an icechest full of water for the dogs with us and started hunting at 8pm instead of 6pm. Mornings are just too hot also.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

I've had and been around quite a few over heated dogs that showed the same symptoms. Most of those were on very humid days... a lot of them with temps in the 70's. Out there it was so dry... a 100 degrees in the afternoon, but you could be outside and not break a sweat. This happened around 10:00 in the morning, just starting to warm up. Kinda puzzled as to why he got so hot without the humidity.

"a 100 degrees in the afternoon, but you could be outside and not break a sweat"

Thats what gets people I think, you are sweating like crazy but never stays on your skin so you sweat even more.  I drank TONS of water all day and only peed once, that water is going somewhere.  Dehydration and over heating are strange enemies that are hard to fight and can begin with events that took place days prior to the actual episode.  Chris talked to Roderick yesterday and I talked to Mandy about it and several good points were brought up that I will take away from bobo passing.  One is the fact that a pond feels cool compared to the ambient temp outside but may not be cool enough to drop the dogs temps fast enough.  Instead use rags and soak them in alchahol or vinegar and drape those over the dog and make sure there is good air movement around bothsides of his body.  Another thing you can do is put ice in a t-shirt or take a cold water bottle and put it between the back legs and do whatever you can to bring the core temp down.  Electrolytes work great but high temps are what cause brain damage and death.  I know that in the future there are a few things that we will do different and that is what it is all about, have to learn from those situations and do better next time.

Sorry to hear that Mike. One of my dogs got extremely hot the other day. I pumped him full of electrolytes and he seems to be fine but I am concerned about his drive now.

Took him yesterday and he didnt seem real motivated but he is always been on and off.

Matt

about 4 summers ago, my bulldog Catch had a heat stroke after a lengthy battle of about an hour.  One of my hunting buddies put a IV on him from his cut kit and he was up and walking minutes later.  That is something we should all learn to use and have handy when needed.

I hear ya.  I had two dogs heat stroke on me several years ago.  One died in the field and the other one was able to hang in there until we got to the vet.  The first thing the vet did was hook up an IV with saline solution and he was able to lift his head a couple of minutes later.  That moment was the first sign that he might make it and he evntually did.  A couple weeks ago I started carrying a 500ml IV bag with me in the field and have a 1000ml bag in the truck.

Yeah Mandy said she is going to teach me how to give an IV, it is too easy to NOT know how to do it if need be.

Sorry to hear about your dog.
I almost lost my dog Ammo (CD) a few weeks ago to the same thing. Now I'm hunting at night and early in the mornings.

It's not always the easiest thing to set a cathader when your dog strokes out. If you cannot hit the vein you can always skin pop them in the same spot you give your dog it's rabies shot, under the skin top of the neck.

The body will naturally work the H2O through itself. Lost a good CD to the heat stroke this year too... nothing nice. Even if you bring them back they're never the same.

Yeah Mandy said she is going to teach me how to give an IV, it is too easy to NOT know how to do it if need be.
