Title: CAUTION: readers beware... Illegal Barr hog story
Post by: TShelly on January 06, 2013, 08:05:25 pm
Chance invited Erik and I, to come over and hunt today. It was perfect after the rain yesterday as we were able to track hunt. Which we as trophy hunters love. After making the rounds and driving the roads we only found one track. Dropped Boogie, Briar, Jett and Sarge down. Took a while but before long boogie is bayed on a ridge. I got there just as the other dogs that were down hunting did. They had him spinning and he dropped off the ridge and went and a 100 yards before they mugged down. This was a 3 legged boar hog with some decent little shanks. He went about 150#.. Had my Hawk(6 month old briarxtwillbanksmolly) dog down as well, it was his first hunt and he was baying his butt off.

Anyways cruised the rest of the ranch but nada, no more tracks. The dogs were winding crazy hard across this big pasture that was the neighbors. Come about noon, our landowner called and got us the go ahead to hunt the place next door. Chance took some of his dogs and we took Goose, Sarge, Jett and Ruby trying to make the young dogs find these hogs. There was fresh rooting sporadically everywhere throughout the field. It looked like two hogs from their tracks. One track star 140# track and an absolute stud, fat track. The young dogs grinded hard cold trailing and hunting those hogs. Jett, Big E's 1.5 old black dog, cold trailed 600 yards and was really grinding in one spot. We probably screwed up by going over close to him where he eventually pulled out and came to the buggy.

We got to talking and decided to go back & get Briar, Boogie and Drake from the truck. By now it's 1pm and we have tracked this hog all over a few hundred acres as he traveled alot through his home area since the rain. We pulled up and kicked them loose. Within 30 seconds Boogie opened, already smelling the hog. For those of y'all that don't know, Boogie has an extremely COLD nose for a cur dog. He has even put it to a few hounds before. It's an unbelievable sight to see. Now just because he could smell this hog, it took him a while to work it out. 20 minutes into it, he pulls out and before you know it he's right back over where Jett was working so hard. This time though, Boogie just carries it on another 200 yards and bays with Briar & Drake. We get about 70 yards out and the smaller hog blows by me when I'm going in. Ike and another young gyp of chances joined the bay and things got froggy. You could hear a war going on in the bush. Sporadic dog barks, yelps, hog grunting and then back to baying.

Who would know that a tame, livestock, fat a$$ barrow hog would be so rough on the dogs!! (That's a joke for all the Barr Haters out there) .. This was no doubt a rank, wild SOB!!

Anyways E and I get in to about 20 yards after driving the Ranger through the worst youpon thicket you can imagine. As I crawl in I was shocked when it opened up and this Barr hog was bayed under an old abandoned barn/cabin. He was literally standing underneath the porch. This was awesome video time & just as I got my phone out Redman comes screaming by so I chunked the phone and went in behind him. He never checked up and stuck him like a safety hitting a receiver over the middle. The fight took us out off the barn and into the youpons. I legged the hog and tried to flip him either way but he was too top heavy and too many  cur dog earrings. So I just wheel barreled him up and dumped him. Big E got there and tied him while I went to scooping up dogs. Briar got a nasty cut into his flank and thigh muscle. He was laid out. Drake had 5 pokes, but thankfully all are superficial. 1.37 miles later boogie bays the other hog that broke out. We finally were able to get to him after 2 hours. After walking in 500 yards, the hog broke just before we cut the cd's loose. Thankfully boogie started getting tired and we were finally able to catch him at dark. Chance we sure appreciate the hunt, it was awesome!!! Great time

People feel free to guess on his weight. He will be butchered and weighed tommorow morning...

He was a dang good hog. But I will tell ya'll if I was hunting a competition and he didn't count I would be pissed. I did not work this hog I this is the first time I have hunted this place in 12 year's. This hog put one of the best strike dogs out of commission witch would have ruined most Hunters for a competition cause it would have knocked there best dog out. It was alot of fun and I really enjoyed the day. Looks like we will get to make more trips with the land owner.

#335..  Chance i understand your point on taking the best strike dog out but not in everyones case.  SOme have dogs that sit back a little further and let the cd's do the dirty work.  Nice hog by the way and I'm not against barrs just saying allot of other dogs on that same hunt might not have been cut.  Everyones dogs are diff and i have hunted with Erik and Tony..  Dogs are pretty gritty for the bottom that they have..  Nothing wrong with that, just need to carry a staple gun a little more than i have too! ;)  Oh, and what happen to that BOAR running so far??   ;)

I don't really understand the statement but sure we will gladly buy extra staple guns!! :) I seem to remember those same rough dogs putting 10 in the trailer, compared to 2 for the loose one in the TDHA last year. ;) I'm not a betting man but I like those numbers. As for the first boar, he ran hardly anywhere bc of the rough dogs and tripod legs. The last hog that broke out and went a mile and half was actually another Barr that was laying with big boy

Oh i thought it was a boar!  Ya'll deff brought plenty of dogs, which is what we needed for the TDHA!  i can only speak for one loose dog on that hunt that stayed with the hog the longest!  Not speaking of anyones dogs being any better Tony, just stating that i think it can be done with less dogs (loose) and a good catch dog with less staple guns! ;)

I love the post just dont agree with some of the things barr hunters are fighting for?  DOesn't matter to me one way or the other if there going to be accepted...  i'd rather have a chance at winning against everyone weather there feed lot hogs, barrs, doesn't matter to me just saying i don't understand the fight beteween harder to catch or not!

My point was txhogsondogs is that it was a hog and it took time and he was not an easy catch if they are in the woods then they should be allowed it it is a hog. We track hunted this hog not knowing what was at the end of the race. Oh and he is headed to the packing house to be made into sausage witch you have openly stated you don't agree with either. But there will be food and alot of it made off this hog.

WHo said i don't agree with a hog going to the packing house??  Just picked up 2 last Friday!  (mine were 100 pds a peice though/ melt in my mouth)  I havent't ever disagreed that they shouldn't count in a post.  My point that i guess I'm not getting across is i don't agree with everyone that catches these barr hogs to be the toughest out there!  ALlLthe stories ive read with hogs running and taking allot of the pack out has happen to me with boars!  At least ya'll sent one to the packing house i don't have to worry about on the next way in! ;)

SO what did he weigh??

Title: Re: CAUTION: readers beware... Illegal Barr hog story

Ok you clearly stated that we are lieing about doing it for the meat. The first thing that was said is that this hog will make alot of sausage. Not I wish we would have saved him for a competition  The hog has not been weighed at this time he will be weighed this evening  To me barrs are tougher to catch than any boar but thats just me. And these barrs do run. Did this one no but does every boar no. I guess it don't matter much we will keep hunting and working our hogs enjoying what we do.

I sure did state that because cutting lets just say 30 hogs in a year which i know is low because i just started doing it, there is no way a family even of 10 can eat all that!  Just admit we do it for the sport!  I know of working hogs but todays times don't work them for the same cause!  Just like feeding protein to our deer, my grandpa always told me you can't eat the horns...  but dang grandpa they sure do look good!  ;) Same trophy we are all looking for!

Title: Re: CAUTION: readers beware... Illegal Barr hog story
Post by: cward on January 07, 2013, 06:23:09 pm
You don't know me and I won't  admit we cut them for the meat. Always have and always will. We were cutting hogs before the internet. You don't know how many times its been said I sure hate given our barrs away in a competition. When we do catch them we expect them to count. If your turning barrs loose for competition thats fine. But we are not they are in the woods where we hunt. If its competition weekend and we catch some yes weigh them in. If not we are eating sausage. There is a ton of guys around me that have never entered a competition and Barr for the meat only. That is the truth. It is a trophy when we catch one like this one but its not every day thats for sure.

Mike I would not get this decisive over something like this if I didn't have a true passion about it that's what they don't understand  I guess people think I got on here to argue about the Barr thing just because I was looking for an argument  they really have no clue about what we do and it looks like no matter how much you tell them they still doubt my integrity and passion of cutting boars.

I think the whole Barr idea has been blown out of proportion here and just for the record I will say it again I think it is a good thing to Barr hogs if you can but it seems like the argument never stops. Just when it slacks off some here it comes all over again it makes the post not even fun to read anymore. So why can't everyone just do there thing and enjoy hunting. And as far as one persons dogs versus another's if the guys are happy with there pack and they get the job done that's what matters. My dogs my not run a hog 1000 yds or they may run one for several hours but I will say where I hunt here by my house it is hard to stop a hog with gritty dogs or loose dogs and my dogs are pretty gritty so come on guys lets stop all the bs about barrs vs boars and we forget that a sow can run as long as anything. I wish I could hunt where some barrs are and catch a trophy like they caught. Great hog

Chance, Eric, TShelly

Congratulations on the great hunt and whopper hog.  That is cool!  It is surely a thrill to cast a dog to a big track and then go in later and see something like that standing there.  Good catch and a very well detailed story of the hunt.

BTW, why all of the controversy about dogs and barred hogs?  Putting a hog at the end of the hunt is why we do this.  You and your crew did well.

Chance and Tony,

I'm not gonna hate on ya, that's a damn fine Barr hog. All these ol boys can talk all they want about big slow Barr hogs that are tame. We all three know how a real river bottom Barr hog is. Anyways y'all fellers keep up the fine work.

Well chance I was looking for me a new bulldog so I thought i'd stop by. An yessir as a matter of fact Monday/Tuesday we caught 10 hogs in total. Cut two boar hogs and caught two barrs. We took the biggest one out to make sausage because THAT'S WHY WE CUT THEM!! Not to win contest. We make em fit to eat for next hunting season. But some folks don't understand that. Glad to see you been doin good buddy. We need to try and get together and see if we can't stop one or two

Yeah Clint some people are just IDIOtS!!!! Hell apparently all us Barr hunters do is stock parcels of land by '"cutting their nuts out, removing their running gear"... Some extremely jealous & butt hurt people out there when you start trying to explain cutting hogs to all the Internet warriors

Yep tony makes no sense to me. Just because all they hunt are places that don't allow working hogs they get mad because people catch big Barr hogs all year long. There's not a single place we hunt that would be a surprise to catch a Barr at least every other trip. But me and my crew and everyone else around here work hogs for eating not for competition. No such thing as that around here lol and that's how it has been for a loooooong time. And that's the way it will always be.
