Title: Hog Hunting Tenure (Whats your number)?
Post by: YELLOWBLACKMASK on January 21, 2013, 08:27:05 pm
Well we have had some recent posts about the rookies. Believe we have even had this one pop up before. I want to know what you total number of years experience you have had with (Hunting Hogs with Dogs)

This does not count for prior experience with any other type of hunting or dogging unless it was specifically Hog Dogging.
If you had broken timeframes where you got out....sorry boyz...it don't count. Just your active timeframe.
Post your total number of years experience and if you wish.....what event or followed legacy that led you to this sport.

I know we have alot of rookies....my curiosity is for how many old tush hogs we have lurking in the shadows that only post occasionally.

This is only for fun fellers......so dont turn it into a measuring contest.

Enjoy.

Hog 7yrs total, 2yrs this go-a-round and 5yrs when I was kid with my Dad.
I've been hunting with dogs my whole life. Deer dogs, coon dogs, squirrel dogs, and now hog dogs.  I gave up my baby bottle to a Plott b!tch with 11 puppies cause I thought she need the help!  :D True story

I started in 2004, a guy I worked with (gander mountain) was a hog dogger, we didnt talk much due to being in different departments but i told him I had been tryin to get in the sport but really didnt know where to start...... but I had property to hunt. He said he had 2 litters on the ground and would trade me a puppy per hunt.......got 5 pups and over 1000 hunts from him, we ended up becoming dang good friends and huntin buddies, still hunt together to this day.

The first hunt we ever went on we bayed a 200+ lb barr in a stand of pines in a thick palmetto patch. I have been addicted ever since that cold january mornin. I dont think I will ever willingly quit, my other 1/2 enjoys it as much as I do and believe it or not, cleans kennels and feeds 7days a week with zero complaint. She's just may be a keeper.

And to answer the question lol, i have been hunting almost every chance I get since 2004. So a little over 9years.

Caught my first hog with dogs about 10 years ago... Tried to get a pack together then but too many things kept me from sticking with it...

Have been back in it for close to 4 years, and still don't have a pack of dogs I'm proud of...  :D

But I go 2-3 times a week, sometimes more... Summertime and deer season..

I don't think I could stand myself to only hunt a couple times a month, February - April...

I will roll over 24 yrs next month with these Yeller mutts.

I was raised in the foxhound and beagle circles from birth until I happened across a man with a Yeller dog tied at the backside of a string of foxhounds.

Was very inquisitive about the dog because I had never came across one. The old man that had him told me he was a hogdog. The old man saw the interested questions on my face and turned him loose. The cur dog ran to a nearby barn and began to bay four little black pineys with noses longer than their bodies, that were penned there. I just sat in amazement until my grandfather said we had to go.

I had my dad take me the next week to buy a Ybmc that was advertised in the local trader paper. I had $50 and my dad loaned me $25 more to buy the lil gyp.  Took her home and put her in the pen with eight foxhounds and five beagles. And been hog hunting ever since.

Still owe my ole man for $25.  Haha.   Hoping he has forgotten by now.

Fix to be the big 40 started going with my uncle at 8 only main reason I got to go is he wanted to take my pup he was around a yr old. The only one that made it out if that litter, was trying to figure out if wanted to try that breeding again.  Have hunted somewhat regular since then.   Always having at least 1 dog.   Often that is all it took to bay and shoot the last 13-14 yrs been using catch dogs mostly.

Well we are still setting at

2.5 yrs to 48yrs experience range.  Keep em comming to both ends.

Finally got some of these 30 + yr guys to hit a key.

Good stuff gentlemen.

Here is a question to pose for guys hunting hogs in sixties and seventies.
Share what you have observed that has drastically changed and stayed the exactly the same to our modern day methods.

Got my first dog in 1988, so 25 years this year.  I'm 40 this year.  Slowed down when we moved to the coast for a couple of years but always had a dog or two.  No hunters in the family except a grandfather who trapped rabbits for survival. Its funny my wife was grumbling about dogs one day and mum piped in with "not much point trying to get him to give it up now its just Troy".

I have two boys 4 and 2 and I hope that they want to continue it if not then I'll support them in whatever they want to do, right now they love it.  Really enjoying having the BMC's, needed to do something to keep it interesting for me.  I reckon I've learnt more about dogs in the past 2 years than the previous 10.

Troy

Two things that have changed hog hunting since the early days are cutovers & Russian hogs. We used to bay herds of hogs in wide open woods. Only once in a while did we have a runner. In the 70's we had a importation of Russian boar. We still caught them but we had way more runners. I still kept curs but got into Plotts because of the runners.
We hunted on foot alot & horseback. forgot the year but I thought I was in high cotton when I got a Honda Big red 185cc & started using that to hoghunt on. Got my first telemetry system in 1980 & we caught more hogs because we knew where the dogs were. we used to hunt more for the dogs then we actually hunted them if u know what I mean. Now with gps collars, tritronics & the internet it is alot easier finding good dogs & traing them. Just some rambling thoughts.

Started coon hunting on my dads hip but he got out of it when the divorce came around. But as I got old enough to get my own dogs I started jus training catch dogs and I have to say I was pretty good at it. Did tht for about 3 years straight in high school. And got out of it cuz I worked constant on the road. Now I've had my own pack going on 5 years and never been happier!

Started around 1992 for me....so about 21 years almost.  Mainly walk hunting, bay and shoot with only a dog or two for many years.  Only been using bulldogs, and straight casting type dogs for around ten years.  Got hold of a line of dogs I really liked, and have done my best to keep them just as I found them.

Some years I've hunted a lot, and some not quite so much.  Finding less and less time since my boys are getting older with birthdays, sports, school events, etc., etc., etc.  Around 2004 when I sold my place in Rockport and my boat and quit chasing redfish almost every weekend I hunted a LOT for a few years straight.

Started cat huntin in 1980 down in south texas with two of the best men that a young guy could ever meet. They not only taught me about dogs but about life in general. Hunted hard till my oldest son was born in 1987. Tried to stay with it but my second son was born in 1989 so had to slow down and ended up selling all my dogs. Started going hog hunting with my neighbor in 2001. Got my first real hog dog in 2002 so i guess about 11 years. Been raising my own bloodlines for 6 years now. Dont plan on stopping. Watching your young dogs growing up and doing good  is like watching your kids grow up. Makes you proud.
