Title: Re: Open hound Post by: Nathan83 on January 28, 2013, 07:38:48 pm I don't know she runs them off I know the trails she hits she howls her ass off it don't matter if I'm beside her or if shes 500 yards out but just wonder what kind of terrain would be better to hunt an open dog
Title: Re: Open hound Post by: Bigdog on January 28, 2013, 08:15:59 pm Just hunt her with ur other dogs an c how she does. If u don't like her send her my way I have a bunch of hounds an I catch a lot of hogs. My dogs don't really open much while there trailing but will open wen it's a real hot track or it breaks bay. I don't care as long as ther fast on track an don't open on a cold track. People thinks the dog has to b silent but u can catch hogs with open dogs. Ihave had long races short races n bayed them in ther bed. I think it's more bout Wat u want to hunt with.
Title: Re: Open hound Post by: SwampHunter on January 28, 2013, 09:01:08 pm Swamps , woods , open fields don't matter at all , an I promise she Anit running the hogs off , she either gonna put a hog at the end of the track or quit just like silent dogs ,
I hunt my hounds every terrain there is makes no difference , some do better in Dry ground some better in swampy area just depends on what they used to If she Suposed to strike an bay her own hog then an where u take her she should do it. , just some places will be Easyer because of trailing conditions. Where you from ? Title: Re: Open hound Post by: chestonmcdowell on January 28, 2013, 09:55:10 pm I don't think open dogs mess up hunting much. When I get my pack going I'd like a open dog.it'd probably sound nice and u wouldnt have to constantly look at the tracking system
Title: Re: Open hound Post by: Nathan83 on January 28, 2013, 10:50:14 pm I've only had her a week taking her hunting twice so still in trial just wondering how the pigs react to open dog shes the first one ive had, swamp hunter I'm around the Greenville area in north Texas, she is bada$$ in a bay pin and I'll still hunter her thanks for the advice
Title: Re: Open hound Post by: Irondog87 on January 29, 2013, 10:02:03 pm I hunt a redtick male strike dog with my partners silent plottxbmc and red leopard, we catch plenty of hogs. Like was said, I like not having to check the GPS to see where he is. He is only semi so won't open unless its hot track. If he opens its cuz there is either hogs in there or they were jus there. The other night he found the area where they were hiding and my buddys red leopard pin pointed the hog. Every time I take my redtick he does better and his nose seems to be getting hotter.
Title: Re: Open hound Post by: redline on February 02, 2013, 04:46:19 pm Why are you surprised that your 'hound' is open? That is what most hounds do. In real thick areas sometimes it is helpful to have an open dog burn up the thick woods and get the hogs moving or push them to a crossing where the catch dog is waiting. I personally don't hunt open but have had situations where an open dog would be useful.
Title: Re: Open hound Post by: Nathan83 on February 02, 2013, 07:50:10 pm I also have a walker/curr mix that is silent so not all hounds are open
Title: Re: Open hound Post by: hogdogger98 on February 02, 2013, 07:58:16 pm I just started hunting hounds, and I had the longest race today I have had and I've been hunting 10 years. I would say don't worry about the barking on track if you don't like her bring open send her down the road it's all about what you like
Title: Re: Open hound Post by: curdogs3006 on February 03, 2013, 06:02:47 am I also have a walker/curr mix that is silent so not all hounds are open I second that.I got a cat/walker gyp and she is silent too. Title: Re: Open hound Post by: Bowtech99 on February 03, 2013, 07:36:55 am Wish i could train a cold nosed gritty hound to be dead silent. Mine just don't have it in em, they want eveeeeeeevry one to hear em.
I Enjoy huntin some places with em, Long as there's plenty of road access to stay ahead of em. I wont ever get rid of my Cutter Bay Blueticks. Man i love these dogs. They are 7months goin on 8. They are already huntin on there own and have found hogs. With the Help of Petie My big blue pit RCD, they've caught hogs already. Theres places I'll hunt em, and some places i wont. But, I Do not hunt my Cats and Blues together. I don't want em open. And i want to keep my Cats, Short to Med range. All depends on your huntin style. What work for me, prolly wont work for you an Vice Versa. Title: Re: Open hound Post by: chestonmcdowell on February 03, 2013, 08:52:12 am Where is cutter bay Kennels?

Title: Re: Open hound Post by: Bowtech99 on February 03, 2013, 12:36:14 pm Google cutter bay kennels. Yea he is in North Fla. Theres good info on here and big game houndsman forums. He is a bluetick man, and he has a great line of ticks. I bought 2 males off his Last litter, and have been nothing short of impressed. Great Quailty.
Thats enough Braggin, now the dogs will sit at the truck on the next hunt. rolleyes Title: Re: Open hound Post by: Irondog87 on February 03, 2013, 04:01:28 pm A guy I hunt with has four blueticks and every pup he has that hits the ground will bay. He doesn't even have to train them really. They jus watch from a distance at first them BAM!!! They come over and bay like they've been doing it forever. Some come out semi and some are full blown open when they hit the ground. We've caught dozens of hogs. Some close and some 3 miles away. If the hogs are there they will find them. Sometimes we will cut the hounds out to start the chase then cut em off with some gritty curs, this works very well!
Title: Re: Open hound Post by: drew on February 03, 2013, 06:40:34 pm Sounds like to me she is a open mouth dog
Did u just get this dog ? Have u caught hogs with her Your dog will be open in any terrain if she is already doing it know as Far as her running hogs off because she is open that's a toss up If seen it happen both ways my self I hunt some simi open dog an silent I can hunt a open mouthed dog just not one blabing an any track around an is slow About it Title: Re: Open hound Post by: TexasHogDogs on February 03, 2013, 08:12:00 pm Dont hunt her with any of your dogs that has a chance to be opened mouth unless that is what you want them to become. A lesson I learned the hard way never again.
Title: Re: Open hound Post by: BA-IV on February 03, 2013, 09:31:41 pm A hog dog is a hog dog and gonna bay hogs.
If you think she's running hogs off the place cuz of her barking, chances are she ain't finished or you ain't giving her a chance. Go hunt her by herself cuz a finished find dog will do it by theirself period, and you may come to like her. I don't put much stock in running open and closed mouth dogs together. I'll turn my dog loose with anything. I sure ain't owning a dog I haveto watch what I put it on the ground with, if they open, who cares, they're just saving me from having to look at my Garmin. |
