Title: pseudo rabies killing 2 dogs far
Post by: jdfinney on February 01, 2013, 02:02:27 pm
I went hunting this past Saturday and caught
3 hogs, nothing got cut.  I came home yesterday
from work n I noticed one of my yella dogs was
all bloody n one side of head was swollen really
bad, he was scratching non stop, well this morning
he couldn't even pick his head up so I get him to vet
,said he has pseudo rabies. had to be put down.
well my buddy calls me shortly after n says his dog
eye swole shut n he wont start scratching, he had to
be put down to, its looking like I got a cpl more that has
it. been one miserable day knowing u can't do nothing
for them but put em down.

Pretty sure your vet had to send information off...Have you been contacted by the state?  They seem to want to get involved in these cases and it doesn't take long for them to get wind of it.

Sorry to hear about that bud.and no it is not like normal rabies it will kill a dog guarantee there is no cure and spreads through air or siliva..no there is no vaccine for it only a vaccine for pigs..I am double checking in the morning pigs have no symptoms of it it's only the secondary host...it's not transmitable to humans that they know of and a pig has not been seen with it in the us since 2003 ...now a dog can also get it from eating raw feral meat!!and remember the pigs have no symptoms so be careful...hope this helps

don't know where you got your info that it hasn't been in the us since 2003 . it was found in texas last year and a bad episode that killed many dogs in florida last year as well  .

i had a dog die of it 3-4 years ago from a fla hog . its also called the mad itch . has nothing to do with rabies and no vaccine and no cure . hogs are carriers but other than abortion and small litters they have no visible symptoms .

I've done a lot of reading since this has happen
, 40 to 50 percent of feral hogs are carrier's.
my dogs scratched there head non stop, there head swells up real big, they get restless, n will basically claw
there selves to death if u don't put them down.

Well it didn't post.....but it was from the Florida game commission and like I said but it didn't post it was last updates in 2010 so any episode after that would not have been on there ..so sorry but everything else is true

I talked to a biologist at one of the public hunts in which Chance came down. There is a vet and a biologist checking blood samples of hogs taken from that hunt and others. They had tested over 50 or so hogs and counting. Depending on locations between 1 and 3 and 1 and 5 tested positives as carriers of the disease.

Psuedorabies has almost been eradicated in the Domestic swine herd because of a vaccine for domestic pigs.

I asked if it was a young dog because it seems younger dogs and dogs with compromised immune systems seem to be the dogs that come down with the disease. A vet believes that older healthy dogs are exposed to the enough continually that they build a resistance to it. NOT an immunity but stronger resistance!

if the vaccine works on pigs...It just makes me wonder why it doesn't work on dogs???

well they are most likely testing it out rueben but you know how american medicine works . they have to pay alot of folks to test vaccines for many years before they will use it  . mainly because we are a [ i'm gonna sue you] socioty .

Sorry to hear about your dogs.  I know how you feel, about 7-8 years ago I caught a boar on a Thursday night.  Loaded up dogs on Saturday night to go hunting again and my good bay dog was scratching the whole time.  We caught a few hogs and came home.  Next morning he was laying on his side and scratched the hide off of his ribs.   Put him down.  Then noticed my best strike dog Jane was starting to scratch and so was my American bulldog.   They both died the next day.  It took a while to get my stock built back up.  Still makes me mad about that hog.  We have hunted that spot 100 times since then and never had a problem.

It is a live vaccine. It might also work on dogs.

For what limited cases and such a small market it would be hard to justify the cost of testing a vaccine on dogs.

i read an artical last year when this was a topic and it basicaly said that many hogs have it but don't actualy shed the virus unless the hog is sick or in a stressed out condition . wich being bayed up and caught would do  .

My Vet felt he could use the hog vaccine and by a series of shots give a dog some immunity. When he ordered the vaccine, the state came down on him like the plague had broken out. They wanted to know who owned the hogs, where they were located, how many hogs there was, what was the extent of the outbreak. They would not sell it for use on dogs.
