Post by: kneedeep on February 09, 2013, 08:11:42 pm I got a new dog from a Guy in jewett get her home to find out she has kennel cough she hasn't been around any of my other dogs yet, but I have a bitch with pups on the ground about a week old should I worry about the pups
Title: Re: question about kennel cough ? Post by: KevinN on February 09, 2013, 08:53:34 pm I would keep the infected dog AWAY from the momma and pups. Kennel Cough is just a virus..a cold like humans would get....but, I still wouldn't let the dog NEAR the momma and pups.

Bordetella/Kennel Cough is viral/airborne. Also, if you touch the infected dog, wash your hands GOOD before handling/fooling with the other dogs. :) Title: Re: question about kennel cough ? Post by: Taylorharris.1991 on February 10, 2013, 04:48:51 pm I jus had an outbreak in my kennels the best way to kill it is let it run it course but def keep it away from the pups it can kill puppies I lost 1 out of3 pups due to it it should blow over in 10 days give or take a few if it last longer they proly got a upper respritory infection at that point u will notice green snot n the dog will act real sickly so u will have to start treatin with antibiotics

Title: Re: question about kennel cough ? Post by: MrsLouisianaHogDog on February 10, 2013, 07:28:08 pm You can pick up the Bordetella vaccines at TSC. I'd go ahead and vaccinate your yard minus the dogs that has it. You can make em worse by vaccinating them while they're sick.
Title: Re: question about kennel cough ? Post by: jsh on February 12, 2013, 05:18:10 am I can tell you based on experience with 13 dogs getting it last year - doxycycline was what worked for me. Some people, even vets, will tell you to run its course but that did not work for me.
When the dog(s) are over it, take the advice on here and vaccinate your dogs for $6/yr. it has to be kept cold. I don't buy vaccines at TSC around here cause I don't trust their handling (ie - keeping them chilled constantly). I see the drugs at my local feed store delivered in ice chests and go straight to the cooler. Good luck. Kennel cough is a pain in the a$$...and spreads like wildfire. |
