Title: Stag Hounds Post by: boarcutter14 on February 13, 2013, 01:13:26 pm Does anyone run stag hounds on hogs as your cd? I just got two stag pups to bring speed to my pack and wanted to know how well they work on hogs. Thanks.

Use him as a lead in. Haven't caught a hog he couldn't handle yet and he has been on a bunch.
Title: Re: Stag Hounds Post by: boarcutter14 on February 13, 2013, 02:49:58 pm Can you hunt them as running catch dogs letting them run with the rest of the pack or is it better to turn them loose once you have a bay? or does it matter?
Title: Re: Stag Hounds Post by: chads7376 on February 13, 2013, 02:52:57 pm Im sure you could but I dont hunt that way.
Title: Re: Stag Hounds Post by: SwampHunter on February 13, 2013, 04:09:56 pm I wouldn't do it , they gonna be wore out if they run a hog 3 miles an they been running the whole time ,
An they are gonna be hard to trash break off yotes deer an rabbits an stuff they got strong prey drive if it runs they want it Title: Re: Stag Hounds Post by: Silverton Boar Dogs on February 13, 2013, 07:37:02 pm Some Stags are very hard, straight catch type dogs. Some are softer and more the stop dog type.
I have had a Stag or two on my yard for the last couple of years and I really like them for pig dogs. I use mine a couple of different ways. 1. Straight sight work in open farm ground or pretty open pasture. They are deadly for this type of hunting and can't be beat. 2. Turn out at first bark or when I know the cur dogs are in pigs. I do this in brushy areas day and night. They will shut a hog down right now and catch with my curs. 3. I do hunt them down with my curs when hunting really rough canyon country. They can go anywhere, straight up or straight down and cover ground in the canyons faster than a straight cur. They are very hard to trash break, if it runs it dies. So you have got to be careful where you put them down. Title: Re: Stag Hounds Post by: boarcutter14 on February 13, 2013, 10:08:51 pm Thats great advise from everyone. I really appreciate it.

Haven't even attempted trash breaking, just a lead in or one out dog in open fields.. Title: Re: Stag Hounds Post by: SwampHunter on February 19, 2013, 07:19:55 pm Works great , they let him run good an are tough , has saved him pleanty of times they kind of pricey but for sure worth it, the Aussies have been hunting this type a dog a long time they got the vest pretty well figured out
Title: Re: Stag Hounds Post by: GAhunter on February 19, 2013, 07:39:13 pm Stags are great dogs! They take longer to mature but if you have patience, you'll have a machine! Pit/greyhounds work well too. This female belongs to a good friend. He produced her out of a hot blood dog to an inbred Mayday female.

There's more like her coming and trust me, you can't find blood like this anywhere else! Sorry to get the thread off topic with a pit/greyhound. ;D
Like I said, stags are great dogs! Silverton is the man to listen to when it comes to them! Title: Re: Stag Hounds Post by: Silverton Boar Dogs on February 19, 2013, 10:28:22 pm I really like the looks of that GH/Pit female. How fast and how hard are they? And do they all have that look or is there some variance in the litters.

And do they all have that look or is there some variance in the litters. Hey Mr. Paul. They are very fast and very hard. This female has killed SEVERAL coyotes on her own. She is straight catch on hogs. They all have had this similar look. He has used 2 different males and 2 different females and all have been very true to this type. Like I said before, you won't find greyhound blood like this anywhere else in the hunting world. Title: Re: Stag Hounds Post by: Big Joe on February 20, 2013, 10:06:29 am Where do these grey hounds come from ? Does the man sell this cross ?
Title: Re: Stag Hounds Post by: GAhunter on February 20, 2013, 07:08:33 pm He is a hog hunter who has a little of everything. He has some track dogs as well as some very well bred game bred bulldogs. He mainly does the breeding for himself and may place a few with his friends so most are usually spoken for but send me your contact info and I'll let you know if any come available.

Title: Re: Stag Hounds Post by: kansascoyotehunter on March 02, 2013, 08:14:57 pm Have hunted stags for 25 + years here in kansas they are a great dog to use on all sorts of game however on the trash breaking side if you buy a dog that is old it will chase whatever it has been taught to and who knows what they guy or guys before you had trained him on so he will do what he has been trained to do thats only right but if you take a pup and break him as he grows up 90% of the time he will only chase what you teach him i have had dogs that would let cats sleep in the dog house with them and one cat even had a litter in the dog house the dog gaurded them but the dog were hard core on a coyote. and also had pups that run lose and never chase a chicken or cats and were good on coyote also had a litter i put in with goats to get the used to livestock never effected there coyote hunting really solid litter and would not chase a deer for that reason and stay clear of cattle. it would be like putting a championship litter of hog dog pups in with hogs of there size bet they would never chase a hog if they were raised with them!!!!!!! geuss is what i am saying is its how the are raised!!!!!
