Been workin my Fl cur pups for the past month of so and my 5 month old gyp is suicidal.  I started her off on a small piglet at a month at two and a half months just for giggles and she caught it.  No other dogs just her.  Didnt show her nothin until about a month or so ago and again she caught.  Just her no older dogs nothin.  Well last week i put her in with about a 80lb barr hog (shes 20 pounds at best) and again straight catch.  I let her get beat up a little to earn some respect and it worked for about 5 minutes and then she just started catchin.  Its to the point the other night when i took her to the pen, she got caught by the scruff of the neck, the loose skin between her ribs and back leg, and then by her foot.  Shes not hurt, not even a scratch.  I like rough dogs and like my dogs to catch when i get there or theres two of them, however i dont want suicide dogs.  Anybody got any tips tricks to get her to back up a step or so?

Put her in with a bigger hog and let her learn to respect a hog the hard way, or try a muzzle. I think an e-collar will possibly do more harm than good. I had a male the same way n it took a bigger hog to make him back up.

I agree with Charles...a muzzle will eventually teach her to stay clear of the pigs snout...but she will need a vest because it is in her to be rough...

Some dogs come out that way...I'd imagine she will be that way til she survives a few cuttings and learns respect the hard way.

If you put her in the pen with more than one hog it may help her learn to bay. If I work my pups I usually do it with more than one hog. It seems to teach them to work hogs and not just catch the nearest one.

But I doubt she will bay much on lone hogs.

Never thought of puttin her in with more than one.  I like that idea, gonna have to give that a shot.  Ive put her in with hogs three or four times her size and when they catch her (yes thats not a typo) it pi$$es her off even more and she locks down on them..  So my though is if i put her in with a real big rough SOB, which ive got shes a dead gyp.

I agree with Ben..... I don't ever put dogs in a bay pen I start them in the woods.... But that's just how I do it.... And it works for me. In sure there are other ways but he'll take a few times gettin worked over good and either learn to respect one or won't.

Stop putting her in a pen and take her to the woods. Some dogs will always catch in a pen and be completely diffrent in the woods.JMO

Thought about the muzzle but would it take the mouth out of her completely? Don't think you want that. Ben is right I think...some dogs just have that mentality and they learn or they don't.

This is just what do, I take about a 250 boar and nock his teeth down not all the way off jus leave him enough to barely cut skin and put them in with it, it won't hurt them bad but they'll back for sure

Those greyhound basket muzzles work great, they can still bay but not get a bite.  I have a metal one and a plastic/rubber one, i like the metal one better, it doest flex, neither make sores either.

They get trained to bay with a muzzle then when you get to the bay call the dog out take the muzzle off and if will catch the hog. People have been doing this forever.

all i run is ybmc dogs but i wont let one be a catch dog i dont trust them enough to follow them in to a bay, ive seen too many run in and dig their heels in and sit back and bay leaving us with no catch dog

When you are ready to sell her I have cash in hand. Who the hell would feed a hog dog you need to Muzzle?? ;D

Good advice all around,.....I would add that remember, she's only 5 months old, still a child in the dog world even though she acts like a grown dog. I would think hard before I put her in a pen with a big hog if she were mine,....she has something missing in her that keeps a dog from doing anything that will gravely endanger her. If she does catch on a bigger hog she may lose some teeth in the process which isn't good. She may never get out of this,....since she started right off catching....I'm doubting that she will ever back up and bay, but you never know.....good luck buddy....keep us posted.

Lots of people use to do this. When they had dogs that was good at finding hogs but would catch before they told them to catch or kill pigs. They would either muzzle the dog or kill it. The old timers would not tolerate a dog that would catch befroe they told them to. The muzzle does not hender the dog it can still breath, bark, and drink with it on.

Thanks for the advice guys.  I run FL curs which by definition are hard headed and gritty dogs.  I like mine to catch in teams and smaller ones alone but this little gyp is ranker than any ive had to date. I dont have nor have i ever had just a CD for this reason the muzzle idea isnt gonna happen because i want my dogs to catch just not suicidal  ;), but appreaciate the thought.   I like Cajun's idea of gettting her to work pairs.  And when i say in a pen i mean a couple acre pen, not a small one.

But I dont think you would ever get a hog to stop running here if a dog could not/would not put teeth in the rear end.

put her in with a couple well sizes hogs, however i think she will
 be straight catch if she is confronted with one hog,  but at least you might get her to bark! ;D

I am pretty sure these were the straight Curr litter.  Ryan, you just bring her to Chalonitka and I will take her off your hands lol the only way she is going to learn is woods time..putting her in a pen with a big hog is going to get her hurt and could ruin her all together IMO.

I do not see why yuou want to stop her from being that rough, unless you just want a bay dog. Tell you what, I have a litter of pups on the ground from some real good Fl Cur stock. Come pick what you want and I will take her. Thats how I want my dogs!!!

Ashley, she aint goin no where lol...  I like my dogs rough just not suicidal  ;)  and when i say pen it a couple acre area.  she finds them and then its on, no barkin at all.. wanna give her a little more time to grow before she hits the woods, shes a little on the vertically challenged side  :D
