Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? Post by: Reuben on March 04, 2013, 06:46:20 pm it's a baying competition...I went a couple of times when it first started up...don't know about now but back then it was all catahoulas that won the bayings...another thing...the handler is probably a good bay dog trainer for the bay pen...
some thing I always wanted in the bay pen competitions...and that was for the dog handler to make the hog break so the dog could be judged on stopping ability...but with hindsight now... some of the dogs will latch on for more than 5 seconds and that would disqualify them and, that would be ammo for the anti's... Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? Post by: dodgegirl on March 04, 2013, 07:03:47 pm I remember going to one in okeechobee fl when I was a little kid. But it got shut down. I would imagine its not a good image for hog doggers.

Hog doggers are doing a pretty good job of their own at projecting a bad image with all the videos splattered all over the internet. Google Uncle Earls on you tube and you will only find promotional videos. They do a pretty good job of making sure no unwanted pics or videos are taken. Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? Post by: redriverdogos on March 05, 2013, 07:30:18 pm Its a good time. Really more of a penning competition like with the Border Collies. Some great dogs there that people have spent alot of time with. Gamey hogs. As described by Reuben, the dog teams are penalized for a "catch". Mininal turn out from the "bunny huggers" last year. There are dogs sold there, alot of vendors who sell gear (cut vest, collars, leashes, hobbles, tracking systems and every T-shirt you can imagine). Last year there were some "celebrity" appearances from The Pig Man and the cast from American Hoggers. Biggest redneck event Ive ever been to......right up my alley. Hope that helps dodgegirl.

Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? Post by: Circle C on March 06, 2013, 08:16:47 am Don't think I'd put it in the same category as sheep penning..... I'd much rather watch a good dog pen sheep, than a hog in the middle of a round pen being barked at by a "hog dog". ;D Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? Post by: Spencer on March 06, 2013, 10:13:04 am I have been going to earls for the past 6yrs, and its our yearly vacation that we look forward to the second we leave the parking lot the previous year. It was the first trip me and the wife made together when we were dating, and im the one that proposed to her in the middle of the arena two years ago. We will be there from Tuesday through Sunday. Placed 7th last year in the 2-dog, and hopefully we will do a little better this year. We have been working hard, so we will see. Everyone that can should come out, Its a blast!

That's what's it's more about to me...striving for perfection. Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? Post by: ED BARNES on March 06, 2013, 06:34:49 pm I will be at earls this year, look me up so i can put some faces to names. Ill be tied to the Tuskers magazine trailer all week.
Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? Post by: Circle C on March 06, 2013, 07:51:01 pm I can appreciate one striving for perfection.
I just don't "get" bay pens. I'm not saying anything is wrong with them, just that I don't get it. I've been to a handful, but I have trouble seeing where the bay pen comp applies to a hog dog. The face to face, nose to nose baying without looking away is not something I would be looking for in a hog dog. Let the dog look away, so that it takes pressure away from the hog. Let the dog circle, look out, back off a bit and let the hog settle. Seems all those things will get one docked at the bay comps I've been to. All things I want in a hog dog.... Now make no mistake, I think people that want to have pen dogs should continue to be able to, andI'll support the pens in that manner. I just don't care to support them with my attendence. Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? Post by: KevinN on March 06, 2013, 08:00:43 pm Understand what your saying...totally! It's always been my opinion that a champion pen dog and a jam up woods dog can't exist in the same body, lol.
People will argue I'm sure...but I've never heard of a woods dog winning at Earls and I doubt any of the past winners have seen much woods time. Course...as much as a winner at Earls is "worth"......most people wouldn't take the chance on putting them in the woods. Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? IMO the best woods bay dog will not have the say style of baying as a champion bay pen dog so he will never win in a bay pen competion... Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? Bay pens are about the same as the tournaments, it all just depends on who gets lucky and gets the right hogs.... ;) ;D I've been to earls twice, and might have watched a total of 30 minutes of baying.... I just dot get much out of it.... I mainly go for all the vendors... Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? Post by: KevinN on March 07, 2013, 09:10:42 am I here you on the luck of the draw. Back in the day....the Full Boar Bay pen would give you a free "turn out".
If the hog put in the pen didn't suite you...you turned him out...but HAD to take the next in line. I used that option many times. It paid off more than it hurt. Some dogs score better on a soft hog...some need a hog that holds there attention. A rough dog would probably do better on a hog that sets up in a corner and is content to be bayed. Put that same dog on a green hog and he may catch out. A great dog is going to score well on any hog but if your dog isnt just a jam up specimen....for a perfect score you need the stars to align just right, lol. Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? Post by: Muddogkennels on March 07, 2013, 10:27:42 pm a good pen dog needs a tuff hog that will fight an the dog has to make the hog turn to fight not let to hog drift thats why its not all luck judges know when a good dog is doing what it can.
Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? I respectfully disagree. "Good" is a broad spectrum definition. A "seasoned" pen dog.....one that reliably puts money in your pocket will sit right on the nose of a soft set up hog and bay the hair off him. That being said...same dog WILL put teeth to a hog that wants to run. As far as a good dog doing what he can....I'd bet money a dog on a really rough hog that moves multiple times.... even though the dog is "doing what he can" ain't gonna score perfect. Title: Re: Is uncle earls still on? Post by: hoghunter71409 on March 08, 2013, 11:19:24 am I live about 45 minutes from Winfield and my boys and I try to go every year. It is a good time and it is a family type event. Lots of pups and dogs for sale. If you want it...it is probably there for sale. I wouldn't expect to find good woods dogs, mor eof the bay pen style in my mind. I usually buy a couple of lead ropes and get my boys a t shirt. Usually dog boxes for sale too. We usually watch a couple bays and that is about it. Once you've see a couple, you've just about seen them all.
