Title: open or silent ?
Post by: cuttingup on March 17, 2013, 09:08:06 pm
Just wandering what yalls take is on which you like an open dog or silent dog..I've hunted throughout the years with both...I've caught hogs with both..I've got a 1/2 running walker and 1/2 cat that's  open and hes put a bunch of hogs in the bag...i guess its just what each wants to hunt with..

cold nosed and open I don't care for...

medium nosed and too open I don't care for...

fast tracking dog that opens once the track heats up is ok with me...

I got a couple silent curs and I have a cold nose open plot she can flat move a track and get bayed quick and will Tear the mutts out of one when he turns to run. You ask open or silent I like the ones that CATCH HOGS and that is all that matters to me

I prefer a silent dog.but some of the best dogs ive ever seen or wide open. now the way hogs run open or silent doesnt really matter. after they run half a mile all of them know whats up. i kind of like hearing a open dog a hound

Makes no difference to me. If the dog wants to sing the pig a song so be it. I just want it to put teeth on it when the pig gets close to the mic.

My redtick opens on fresh signs and hot tracks. If you hear him there is hogs in the immediate area. I've caught more hogs with him then any silent dog I got. He acts likes slow hound but I ha e had him catch in a pasture before which he ran a 80# sow out of the woods, so he must have some speed:) answer should always be, what catches you hogs!

It never really has bothered me. Iv had a good open strike dog and a good silent one.
I have a young dog raised out of 2 dogs the dad was ailent and the momma was open. The pup is oprn sometimes and sometimes he isnt. Im actually thinking about gettin rid of him, not any faults to me while hunting. Just in alittle bit of a bind

Thats my feelings to halfbreed... it's different strokes for different folks... I don't have to look at my garmen every 2-3 minutes.

I like a dog to be semi tight mouthed while trailing but once they've jumped I want them to open every time there foot hits the ground

I don't like ones that bark just to bark, but when my my redbone nips a bit she is running a hot track or right behind one. I don't mind that, they produce hogs

I don't care either way, but if you're gonna be open, you better be fast moving a track or you'll get culled.

Besides dogs that open some just help save me from looking at my Garmin

Exactly, you know they are right behind a hog. If they nip a bit on hot sign usually they always end up finding and baying him up
