Post by: byrd on March 18, 2013, 11:11:29 am
when a hog breaks bay and takes off running how does he know that a silent mouth dog is chasing him ? does hear him running behind him does he smell him does he just sense it and i have been hunting for a long long time and i cant figure it out i know he can hear a barking dog .but he cant hear a silent dog  until he stops are the dog graps him by the rear

After he breaks the bay he know they after him an he gonna run till he gets tired or thinks he can hide , then when he see dog again he run again , till he tired or dogs loose him
The key to stoping running hogs is a fast track dog that can keep him moving with no rest

These guys that say there dogs will put teeth to stop runner haven't been on a hog that knows the game an is gonna run , hogs are fast real fast an know where they are going , so when they decided they gonna break an run you just gotta have fast  moving track dog that will stay on him till he gets tired an bays ,

Alot of times the hogs break after the dogs had a failed attempt at catching an the hog don't wanna stop again because they think teeth gonna be waiting  , I have noticed looser bay dogs sometimes work better on the real running hogs

Alot of people have diffrent opion on what a running hog is
Some say a mile or 2 is a runner , I'm gonna say 8 miles is a good running hog
The longest I had was 23 mile but alot of hogs we catch don't run more than a few hundred yards to mayb 2 mile an I run open dog

You beat me to it, I was fixin my thoughts to ask the same question!!
BUT to add to it-- how common is it to have a dog that will nip a runner to "make it stop" runnin?

Most hogs know you are there before you even cut loose a dog.
Open or closed doesn't matter , they know they are being ran. Four wheelers , trucks etc all make a lot of nosies that goes a long way in the woods.

I have seen hogs smoke a dog especially in thick stuff! So its my opinion if that dog don't catch him in the first couple jumps...the dogs will catch him again when he decides to stop for a breather or finds a comfortable place to stand and fight!

They will get tired , might take all day or night but they will sooner or later , might have to send more dogs in to the race  like bear hunters do , but the hog will give it up sooner or later

If the hog is running more than likely the dogs have already bayed him or busted him or her out the bed. So they know a dog is after them. if you have open country then the dogs can run the hog down and put teeth to it and make it bay. If you hunt pine thickets then the dogs just have to run the hog til it wants to stop again.

I like this post just the other day we were riding threw the marsh on the ATV jumped a nice size boar I stoped and put 3 dogs to him I jumped up on the dog box on the bike and watched as the hog was running he would stop every now and again turn around and his ears would perk up like he was listening for the dogs when he would here them he get moving again. Now just for the record I really don't care about silent dogs or open dogs I've caught more hogs w open dogs than I ever have w silent ones and I've owned and own both and some dam good ones from both silent and open .but it was really cool to watch that hog stop and listen to them dogs

x2...and when the dogs are busting thru palmettos they can be heard a long ways off...

good hog dogs will catch lots of hogs in open woods...same dogs not so many in the thick briars because they can not catch up to the hog...add hot weather and dogs will over heat before they can bay up lots of the time...and summetime the weeds are tall and thick and that makes the hunt swing even more to the hogs favor...

i wouldnt and my dogs wouldnt know how to act in open woods (lol) the thickets they we bay in the sun never shines in them you have to pipe sunlight in them . but i have fun it is a challenge were we hunt at brais higher than your head .i bought me a go pro camera so i am going to put it on my dog if it dont get knocked off and get a eye view .
