Title: # of dogs?
Post by: Demondoggers on March 25, 2013, 07:50:33 am
How many dogs and pups is everybody handling at one time? How many is to many?

Too many is when you can't give/afford the care and attention to ALL of them. Feed, worming, heart worm med, equipment. vaccines,
occasional vet bills, all add up.

Hahaha ok. I have a 2 sets of pups I'm raising cause I want to have more then one good team of dogs I can take to the woods. I usually take 4 dogs to the woods then my buddy will take his pack but I'm wanting to be able to competition hunt without running my dogs to death. Everybody thinks I have to many dogs.

I usually won't keep more than 6 bay dogs and a couple CD's. Then whatever young pups I may be training up.

I only hunt with 2-3 dogs when I hunt. I keep 4 rough strike dogs and a catchdog. Hardly use the catchdog so I might be going down to 4 dogs.

to damn many! I feed way more than I have the time to hunt..........been doing some serious thinking about cutting WAY back, like cuttin my number in 1/2........I don't get to hunt near as much as I used to, it ain't fair to the dogs in my yard.....granted they are living the highlife but they don't get hunted near as much as they should and my spots are disappearing faster than rims at a p-diddy concert!

i would like to only have 2 to feed one catch dog and one baydog but i have learned over the years its hard to set a number on how many dogs i want to have at once because its always pups coming along from buddys and such and always need one are two back up bulldogs and always have to have a couple young dogs thats starting out. i like to try to keep a few extra dogs around its a bad feeling to have a good place to go hunting and not have a dog able to go. i have 16 at the time

I have 7 grown cur dogs. 3 bulldogs. 3 pups in training. I always take all my dogs with me when I go hunting may not hunt them all but have them in case i need them. I usualy turn out 2 or 3 let them hunt. Then turn out a different 2 or 3 the nest time. If you are going to hog hunt you need to keep pups coming along the way i see it. I am gonna breed another one of my gyps just as soon as she comes in heat.

If I cut him loose and let him run he will leave out and get on a track. Last time I let him run loose I lost communication with him at 1.9 miles and he was movin!! I have to keep him on a lead until we hear a bay then I can cut him loose. Cut him loose 500 yards from the bay several times and a few times at 600. Mostly because the hog is a runner and after about 2-3 miles of the dogs running a hog I can cut him loose (of course he's well rested) and he will catch up to the other dogs and stop the hog.
