Title: Plantersville, Texas Post by: jhy on March 26, 2013, 08:17:09 am How is the hog dogging around Plantersville, Texas? Anyone hunt that area? I got a big ranch/ plantation that I can hunt for tournament but never been down there and don't have time to go check it out, so any info on the area is appreciated.

I've hunted all around there and most of it is pine plantation with thick, nasty underbrush. Good hog population, but just as many hog hunters... that whole area has been dogged heavily for many years. Lots of barr hogs in that country.
Now if you go west of there, towards Navasota, you get out of the pines and into some good cattle country... lots of hogs and a helluva lot easier to hunt. Title: Re: Plantersville, Texas Post by: Kid7 on March 26, 2013, 11:13:07 am There's lots of hogs over there. But like Mr. Mike said its some tough country in some spots. I don't hunt there regularly but been close a few times. Horses sure do come in handy over there.

Title: Re: Plantersville, Texas Post by: jhy on March 26, 2013, 11:37:54 am I like that Cattle Country, but I should have some help to hit the thickets for me. I'm sure this place has been dogged because the owner is never there and he has a local as his foreman. They said there is a lot of hogs, but you know how land owners can over exaggerate a hog problem. Thanks for the input!
Title: Re: Plantersville, Texas Post by: jhy on March 26, 2013, 02:44:03 pm I looked the Ranch I got permission for up on Google Earth and it is definitely Cattle Country and not the Piney wood thickets, or at least it didnt look to have large blocks of Thickets. I sure hope it is what the owner says, because I have hunted Randy Bumpurs every year and I certainly do not want to miss this year being that it will be the biggest one yet and they certainly have some darn nice buckles too. The main thing is I would just like to come over from Louisiana and Win it!:) Too bad Cole will not be hunting it but BARRMAKER will and beating him would be just as good as beating Cole in their own backyard!
Anybody from this area hunting in the Bumpur's Tournament? Those hogs cant run any faster or further than the ones we have here around the house! Marvin Garrett, Marty Capers, Scotty Dickson and I made a hunt last week and they crossed into three different parishes and crossed the Red River one time and a large bayou several times. We finally gave in before the sunrise and got all the dogs to swim back across the Red River except 3 and we got the last dog back yesterday. They really need to find a way to extend the battery life on these Garmin Collars or integrate a telemetry system into them that will not interfere with the garmin collar. Alot of times they catch 10-15 hogs a hunt but its just like any where else, one place you catch a pile of hogs and go across the street and run one all day.
Title: Re: Plantersville, Texas Post by: matt_aggie04 on March 26, 2013, 04:59:41 pm If you head west of plantersville you hit the navasota river and we have hunted around there with good success for years. Most places that are good for hunting are going to be to the west around the river or north towards roans prairie and singleton but there are hogs all over that country.
Title: Re: Plantersville, Texas Post by: jhy on March 26, 2013, 11:51:39 pm I looked at the place on google earth and it has good water, a lot of tree covered creeks/ ditches between pastures and some wooded areas and plenty of water tanks but didn't link like it close to any major water ways that are corridors for hogs like the Sabine River or Trinity. Just have to see what the foreman says. Thanks for input fellas.
