Title: Victor vs. Diamond vs Sportmix
Post by: b.b.b kennels on March 26, 2013, 02:37:40 pm
Hello! Been a fan of the site for years, just now became a member. I've been raising hounds and hunting hogs for over 10 years now and also manage a feed store outside of San Antonio. About once a month I have a dog food vendor come into the store with the new "Best hog dog feed!"- their words, not mine. Just wanting some input as far as what some of you may feed or have fed in the past and what results you saw. Not trying to peddle anything or start a debate, just wondering. Thank you for your time.

I'm a sport mix fan!!  Dogs keep weight on well with less feed, have plenty of energy and not near as much mess.  I was feeding diamond for a while and it seemed inconsistent and stunk to high heaven!

sportmix myself used to feed diamond but there was alot of chit in the kennels and like said above me stunk and tractor supply would constanly be changing the prices, but i switch back and forth from the blue (26/18) and black (24/20) bag of sportmix for $30 for 50lbs of either one at the local feed store

I honestly like Victor out of all I have tried. The only one I haven't tried is Sportsmix. I couldn't get over the $35 price tag but maybe the feedstore was price gouging me?

Ive tried sportmix but didn't give it time to really answer but diamond is my choice.  I don't feed much and hunting hard since Jan with well over a 100 hogs tied (thats a test i would say) my dogs still look great.  I'm gonna stick with it for 10 more years!  ;)

We started feeding diamond in the beginning and noticed that a lot of feed was coming out the back end. We swapped to sportsmix in the black bag and have been very pleased with it. Victor seems like a good feed also, but for us, the price of sportsmix and availability outweigh the competition.

ur welcome!  ;D Sportsmix is the best i've personally ever fed by far and I don't know of anyone that has given it an honest try that wasn't happy with it............when I first started feeding it my oldest dog caught a whole nother gear, honestly I was blown away at the difference in stamina he had not to mention alot less cleanup!

you should consider selling country value high energy...but the best around but pretty good for the money...

I like sportsmix but when it hit 33 dollars I switched to Diamond High Energy because it is 5 dollars cheaper per bag where I live...I would like to try Victor but there are not any dealers close by...

I would feed country value but I can only get it back home and I will not drive 90 miles to buy it...it is about 10 dollars per bag cheaper than sportsmix...

I use both. Don't seem much difference but my feed store sells ALOT of both so consistency seems to be across the board for both. Both same price but sportmix is 50# so I ll prob go straight but waiting to see if either goes past 29.95 down here

I get dealer prices on victor but switched to sportsmix about six months ago... Victors quality went down hill in my opinion on the 24/20. I never had any problem with 26/18 victor and will likely start feeding that again if sportsmix keeps going up in price

I always fed diamond red and green bag then went to blue sport mix for the last 2 years then in the last few weeks went to yellow and green diamond. I feed the 40# orange and cream diamond bag occasionally. Probably going to get them to order me the black sports mix and try it out.

Thanks for all the input! Sounds like overall Sportmix seems to be the big winner. I've been feeding the Diamond Extreme athlete and am impressed with how great I can keep my dogs looking on a very small amount of feed but I do get much more kennel waste than I did on other foods in the past. Seems like Victor has lost popularity over the years which seems to happen to alot of dog foods in this area that try to target hog hunters.  I think the problem is they assume we just look at the cost on the bag and if its cheaper than most we feed it.  Some of the best nutritionists out there are dog people. Some of yall are feeding over 15 dogs and need them in peak condition at all times.  The $20 mystery bag at walmart isn't doing you any good.  Sportmix and Diamond seem to be where cost effectiveness and meeting a working dog's daily requirements are combined best.

i used diamond high energy for a while , it always seemed to change looks , oily sometimes , real corny sometimes , never used sports mix but have seen it this week in the feed store , the main ingrediant in it was corn which all the lower priced dog foods the main ingrediant is corn or corn meal , never have seen victor in okla. I have switched to diamond chicken and rice , no corn , soy , ect , 31 bucks a bag , I havent used it long enought to know much except my dogs luv it and corn is not on the label at all, the first ingrediant is chicken , I wasnt likeing the look of there coat , there plenty fat but thought they should look better so I swithed up , well see , diamond high energy here in okla. is a little under 22 bucks for 50lbs and sportsmix which it was in a black and white bag was the same , theres so many choices from cheap to holy crap ,

Just remember that any meat followed by meal is not really meat. Blood , hair , skin , etc is ground and call meal.

I feed raw but had to pick up a bag of dry food to feed until my meat shipment made it in. Black bag of sport mix. I liked it. Dogs did too. They didn't poop much more when they went from chicken to it for a few days. 28 bucks at tractor supply.

sportmix 24/20 all the way! I pay only 24.00 for 50 lbs.plus tax It last good because it's better stuff and they need less. I hate it when there's piles of wheat colored crap everywhere it stinks and you can always smell it. sportmix turds are dry in a days time and no mess!It really is annoying to hunt with someone whos dogs are crapping that rank smelling cheap made stuff all day.I never had a dog refuse it. I also like victor but you can look at it and tell it has alot more plant matter in it.

i feed retriever high protein for tractor supply. its 27% protein and 15%fat. dogs look great and dont gotta feed a whole lot. not a lot of waste either...and at like 22 bucks a 50# bag, you cant beat it...

dog food tricks that some companies use...they can raise the protein content by adding hair to the mix...hair is 90% protein but has zero digestibility...

they raise the calcium content with ground up bone but bone is not digestible...

if it say 100 percent complete for all stages of a dogs life on the bag then it is...but they can still add crappy stuff to it to make it look more desirable for the buyer...

sometimes a high quality dog food does not appear to have good digestibility because the dog is fed way too much...

I was feeding sportsmix, black bag. It went to 31$ so I've tried numerous kinds. Retriever was good for awhile then it became inconsistent. Tried red flannel  they wouldn't eat it. Tried to find victor or caliber but to far away. Diamond hi pro was on sale at tractor supply. But they number 2 to much and its pretty rank! I'm running them some. So which bag do you like best sportsmix black or blue bag

I like both but I liked the blue bag a little better because of the size of the kibble...

but sportsmix went too high and I now use diamond hi energy and my dogs like it and they look real good...but it went up a dollar per fifty pounds in the last month...
