Post by: daytonhogs on April 01, 2013, 07:32:15 pm
I'm lookin at getting a new hog gun. Will b used for mostly walking hunting. Want something that packs a punch but that doesn't cost a fortune to shoot. What is your go to hog gun and what would you get if you could. Caliber make model etc. thanks for the help

35 remington in a marlin lever action. Have one with scope want another to throw on the wheeler could have used it the other night.  Shot a couple deer and hogs with mine and it lays the rock down on them.  Shoot the right bullets you have a 250 300 yard gun if need be.

I had a .17 awhile back that never let me down. One to the ear and it dropped everything I put in the sights. Real cheap to shoot and shoots reallll straight. Mine was a savage forget the model. Bought it used for 200 and I think shells went for around 15 for a box of 50

Thanks for the comments. I was leading toward a marlin 30-30 just because of popularity and cheap ammo. How does the 35rem compare to the 30-30? I plan on keepingbtheniron sights as it will be used primarily for stalk hunting in brush. Thanks

Very versatile rifle. Broad range of ammo. 150 gr. pointed to 220 gr. round nose.

Little more punch in a 35 than a 3030. Little larger bullet just a little more powder. I think it is a vary under rated round.  You have something that is good for deer elk etc

Best brush gun for stalking I would say 45-70. That dude will shoot thru a sapling and still kill what ur shooting at. General purpose I use a 308 with 150gr HP Winchester. They work very well on hogs.

22 all day long. If your hunting with dogs and most are scared of gun shots, 22 Cal. In the eye will bring down any size hog.  If your not running dogs the bigger the better.

I carry my marlin 45-70 pretty much every where. Recoil isn't bad and it will flat out put down any hog. Ammo is fairly easy to get and fair priced. The marlin guide gun is a compact rifle and won't weigh you down.
Some folks I have hunted with call it a major over kill and in some situations it is. But no matter what you know you brought enough gun.

heck just get you a good gamo pellet gun and them gold pellets! Any gun will do its just up to the shooter to put the bullet where it counts. Im a lever action man, good brush guns, fast cycling, and accurate out to 300 yards with good ammo.

my rifle of choice is a 410 rossy single shot with a true green dot shooting slugs i have not had anything walk from a shot to the dom ..... my first gun was a 410 tell yall what my dad invested in a trigger lock for me when i was young like 8 years old. i killed birds ,rabbits, i even shot my first deer with a 410 slug.  so any thing 100 yards are closer thats my gun choice now i know its a shot gun but its better then most rifle in the brush.  the group at 100 yards out of 5 shots is 2''  wind is a factor,  but thats with hot loads . now 30-30  is for any longer shots . used to shot a 7mag but my shoulders felt like number 2 after a 3 shot group.

30/30 lever action I don't hardly shoot below the neck on deer or hogs and I'm in to close up hunting so it works fine for me.

30/30 lever action.....Marlin or Winchester model 94.  No need to go any larger caliber than that with hogs.  Use good ammo and it will bring down any hog with average shot placement. A head shot is ideal, but neck, spine, lungs and even liver will get the job done.  Don't let the myths fool you, it will penetrate the shield on boar hogs if you cant take a head shot for some reason.  Just use good ammo, I prefer Winchester super x 150 grain.  Stay away from Federal.  The government and the 30/30 ammo.

The marlin action and trigger mechanism is more reliable, it can take abuse, dirt, and lack of cleaning better than the Winchester. You can also mount a scope more easily on the marlin if you ever wanted to.

The Winchester model 94 is lighter, and in my opinion it shoulders, aims, and shoots more naturally and more accurately than the marlin.  I hold this belief, even though I was started on a marlin as a kid, and a Marlin is what I shoot most of the time.  Its action and trigger mechanism are plenty reliable with occasional cleaning.

Both are built sturdy and would will make excellent clubs.  Sorry, i'm thinking about the federals again......haha.

M1 carbine hands down the best hog gun invented. Shoots a 30 Cal. 110 grain bullet, almost no recoil and won't shoot through a hog that's over 80 lbs. It's short and if you'll put a synthetic stock on it the weight is about 5 lbs. or less. Had one for about 15 years and killed a ton of hogs with it.

.30 carbine are cool but hard to find ammo for sometimes. You are also stuck with just a few bullets types too.

I had a org all numbers non repro that I just treaded. Was a cool gun I just never shot it much.

I don't have the rossi ranchhand but I was strongly considering buying one, I came across a good deal on a rossi circuit judge

I got the .45lc / .410 model, haven't had a chance to break it in yet but I plan on toting it in the future.

I had the Rossi ranch hand. Got rid of it. Not very accurate. It's a cool lookin gun but not really practicle.

Thanks for the info. Its sharp loking little gun though. Probably gonna get the one with full stock and 16" barrel. Would the 45 bebetter than the 44

I'd go with the .44. Just an all around better round. And a lot more options on ammo.

I'm a big fan of the 45-70! Ol 30-30 lever action has been one of the most used brush guns out there for years and years tho and will lay em down great as well. Shot placement is key with the smaller calibers. Few years back I shot a 255# boar quartering away right before he got in the thick brush and he ran like I never shot him. Ran 150 yards but finally ran out of air with no lungs  >:D
